I am doing Buffalo Springs on the last weekend in June, but I have a Bachelor party to attend in Vegas on the weekend of June 10th. My training got bogged down between my little wreck, a small cold, and women, but I am still on track with my training. (my swim will still suck). I get to Vegas late Thursday night and I come back to Austin late Sunday. My thinking is that while I am there, I can swim and run, and maybe bike in the hotel gym? Who has trained while in Vegas for a social event? I am taking one night off to have some fun, but I do plan to keep myself in check. Buff Springs is an important race to me.
Any ST’ers in Vegas? input? thoughts? Hotels with best gyms? pools? willl I look like a poser swimming laps?
I have to go. The guy is one of my best friends and I am in the wedding.
I was in Vegas last month for a batchelor party. We left Thursday morning from Orange County, and got back late Sunday. There was absolutely never time to train on the bike, that is for sure. However, if I ran or swam for training, which I don’t, it’d definitely have been possible. You can always find time for a 45-60 minute run. At the Mirage where we stayed there was also a designated area to do laps that was a part of the main pool. Thursday morning I woke up at about 3:45am so I’d have time to fit in a ride before we left. I didn’t get to bed until about noon on Friday. When your sleep schedule is Vegas style I’m not sure fitting in actual workouts is all that great for you. Just get out and sweat for 30-60 minutes, but I wouldn’t schedule actual workouts.
I was there two weeks ago for 72 hrs. We stayed in rental property in the Green Valley Ranch area-runs are easy anywhere I find-I found the area to have great multi-use paths-did 2hr long run.
For cycling I would recommend: http://www.lasvegascyclery.com/ They have road or mountain. I choose mountain just because I wanted to ride Red Rock Canyon. I had a 2:45 minute ride that felt like 10 minutes-it was awesome. They will guide you on how to get there-it was easy. You can rent R400 Cannondales there-not top of the line but none the less a solid bike-take your pedals and shoes-you’re all set. Can ride straight from their store into the mountains-quite an awesome ride.
I didn’t have time for a swim but did find a Tri-Club in the area that offers a Master’s Swim.
I did mine in the morning and played at night!
Good luck-Darcy
I live in Vegas … at least for another 2 weeks. Most of the larger casinos have nice pools, if you get out there early enough (ie before the bikini clad mobs descend) you should be able to do laps fine. There are also a few lap pools fairly close if you want a better pool for lap swimming (let me know if you want directions).
Running is easy and fun along the strip. Just do it early. Before it gets hot and the tourists are out in force. Last week, highs were in the 100s. I think it’s supposed to be a bit cooler this week … only mid to high 90s.
Try to rent a bike and get in a ride at Red Rock Canyon. The scenic loop is a nice ride, about 14-15 miles. Great scenery. And, it’s free on a bike (park at the lot nearest the entrance).
Where are you staying? Let me know if you have any specific questions.
Great info guys and gals. This forum is awesome. J-son, I think we are at tha Mirage, but I am not 100% on that. Thanks again.
I was there about 6-7 months ago and posted the same thing. I did not take my bike but I called down the concierge and told them that I was looking for a spinning class to get some good riding in. I apologize that I can not remember the hotel the gym was in, but they hooked me up. I went through a good spinning class (1 hour) and then they let me take a spinning bike out into the gym and ride a couple more hours. They even brought me bottles of water!! If you want me to, I can research it for you quickly.
Good luck! Lord knows I sweat a lot of beer out of my pores that day…
I run the Strip (as j-son suggested) when I go out there, but I agree to do it early. Get out there right before sunrise to avoid the heat and tourist hordes. You’ll encounter a surprising number of early morning runners, in addition to the hookers and drunks.
No need to do any research, but thanks for offering. My biking is my strongest event, so even if I can’t bike Fri, Sat, Sun, I will be OK. Running and swimming should do the trick, but I might try the bike rental thing if I get the urge. thanks again
Actually quite a bit going on in Vegas on that weekend. The LVTri club is having a Mini-triathlon at lake Mead, Lowery’s multi-sports is having a kids camp at the sight of the Inaugural Silverman Triathlon and the Las Vegas Running Team is having a weekly long run up to 40 miles if you like.

Oh yeah, the run with the runnning team is Sunday at 6:00 am (to beat the heat), fully supported, with a van and water along the way, and breakffast when you return. FOR FREE!!! Also, if you run with them, call Dan “The Running Man” Campbell and he will pick you up at your hotel.
Whatever you do - REMEMBER THAT IT’S DAMN HOT OUT THERE!!!
