Training Wheel Recommendations ... Tubulars Preferred

Ok … I need some help. I have my race wheels, and yes they are tubulars. To be exact a Corima 4-spoke rear and an A-12 front. I also own a set of Zipp 303s (came with my road bike in lieu of the shimano wheels that were backordered in 2003).

I currently have a set of clincher training wheels that I hate. I really like the feel and durability (at least for me) of tubulars. So should I convert my 303s to training wheels or do you guys have some other recommendations.

Thanks, Pete.

I’m curious, what about them feels better? I got a pair of tubular race wheels this year and I really don’t feel any difference from clinchers

old school man! If you have durability issue try using Conti Gator Skins. I don’t think you’ll find anymore durability from a tubular

I think, may just be psychological, that tubulars “feel” smoother and maybe softer as well. By that I mean it seems as if tubulars are less abusive (road vibration, etc.) when compared to tubulars at the same tire pressure ridden over the same route.

303s would be some expensive training wheels. Find a pair of Reflex rims on ebay and build them up 3x around your hub of choice. They’ll be bomb-proof, depending on spoke gauge - lightweight, and the baking surface will be a bit nicer than the carbon. Not taking a dig at zipps braking surface, I love my 303s, they just aren’t aluminum. Plus if some ya-hoo takes you out on a group training ride, or you manage to nail a pothole, the new rim is $60, not $300.
