Training Wheel Question...for tech heads!

The scenario:

Heavy, heavy duty aluminium box rims.
Laced to heavy, heavy duty hub (9 speed)
36 heavy/thick/big spokes
36 brass nipples
Heavy rim tape/straps
25c tyres/thick tubes

These wheels would be heavy, absolutely non-aerodynamic, and would ride soft!!!

Would using the above be beneficial to training, so you can race well when you swap to race wheels?

Can you see any potential problems with this method?

pinkboy…did I mention ‘heavy’

Anybody?

I think it’s a fine idea. As long as you give your race wheels a spin a few times if you’re not used to riding on deep dish, trispoke or disc wheels.

Now go design some swim intervals for me!

Heavy-assed training wheels rule! So much so that I race on them too

Seriously, you have a good plan there. Just make sure you take your race wheels out for a spin every once in a while so you’re comfortable with the handling.

Train heavy, race light

Heavy tape ? Is it made of lead ?

dude, nothing’s worse than having superman be able to see through your wheel when he’s drafting off you.

which brings up the question: if superman was to draft off you in a non-drafting race, would you call him on it? tell the rd? throw kryptonite at him?

ban behind-the-seat kryptonite launchers!!!

uhhh, pinkboy. your idea has no downside whatsoever, apart from modern-day unfashionable-ness ( is that a word? )

in fact, your idea is what used to be known as What You Should Be Doing. someplace around the time somebody figured out you could make wheels out of less material, and more air, and charge four times as much for them even tho they last only a third as long your idea faded away from popularity, i guess. so, perhaps you could be a trendsetter!

train on training wheels. whodathunkit ???

“Heavy wheels don’t make you stronger, they just make you slower”

regarding that, read some non-quantified blurb from an experienced builder:

Also, about this 36 spoke (14-gauge?) wheel riding softly, (barring your choice of 25mm tire), read some rather quantitative stuff here:

I recommend the idea. I use Slime® liners in my tires for training, which means fewer interruptions for fixing flats and pulling the heavier load. On race day I feel supercharged.
