I recently came across someone who proclaimed you can redline for a whole event if it was short enough and you trained for it.
I have a sprint event coming up and I’ll like to have a good race and I think redlining the whole way is the way to go. so a couple of questions:
a. How do you train to redline the whole time during a tri
b. How can I accomodate 3 bike, 5 runs and 4 swim in a week
c. What order is better Long run/tempo run or tempo run/long run
d. What is a good swim volume per workout for a sprint swim 750mts
A: The human body can truly sprint for about 27 seconds, anything longer and you’re not really redlining. Train fast more and you’ll be able to go fast longer.
B: Get up earlier. Every week has 7 mornings, 7 afternoons and 7 evenings, so you can probably squeeze in 12 workouts.
C: You want to run hard in a race, run hard during training
D: Swim as much as you can, you’re competing against people who have been swimming 1000s of miles since they could read. Swim workouts fast.
I know this sounds sarcastic, but I’m quite serious. Train fast to be fast.
Another bad definition of redline.
You can only redline for maybe 1 minute, max, if you are in the best shape of your life and on this planet earth.
So this someone is full of …
in the context of a sprint Tri, I’d allow that ‘redlining’ could be trying to do each of the 3 legs as fast as you can do them stand-alone… i.e., not pacing to ‘save’ yourself for the run.

You sure as hell can try… of course there’s some performance lag as your body transitions from one activity to the next so it’ll turn out a bit slower than if each were stand-alone, but in my exp if you go into it with the mindset of holding back on the pace/effort you give up more time in the swim/bike than you get back in the run (i.e., limiting the diff between your Tri split and open 5K).
nope, never have. Won my age group in my sprint Saturday, got invited to the ITU world long course championships last week. Must be doing something right. I go as fast as I can, even on HIM distance. Not saying its good for everyone, works for me though.
Gah! You’re absolutely correct! Here, let me try again.
Ahem.
Dudes. I was out bikin’ and shit and all the ladies were lookin’ while i was doin’ 30 up Mount Palomar (more like Anthill Palomar, AMIRITE?!). I did an easy 10,000k swim in the morning and some 13 mile repeats at the track. You know, typical day. Anyways, I was admiring my amazing physique in the reflection from the rear window of the BMW my coach drives to pace me during my bike workouts and I realized that I’m so goddamn fast. I mean, I’m, like, really fast. I won my local sprint race*, which, let me tell you, had a stacked field. I redlined that shit straight through. Anyone who can’t redline a Half Ironman is a big pussy. Sure, it’s technically impossible to stay above your lactate threshold for that amount of time, but, look, I’m not a pussy. Go cry to your mommy or something because this guy is all about speed and lookin’ good.
Anyways, gotta run kids. UPS is at the door with my Shiv. My P4 got some chain lube on the seat stay. That’s the third one this month!

Now that’s what I’m talkin’ about!
Tyson, was that really worth the effort? I answer a question the OP asked, and clearly stated it was how I approached things. You are the one getting pissy with your comments. Tyson, why don’t you tell me how I should train and race, im sure you can take me to the next level.
you are clearly a bit of a prick. But as another thread on this forum has mentioned, we have quite a few here, so you are in good company.
so what is your definition of “redlinin”? pushing hard as you can, correct? my 5k time is about 6:09/mile, my recent sprint 5k was around 6:40/mile. They both hurt the same.
this really is not at all relevent to the topic at hand, but if you are letting internet forums work you up this much, then i would imagine you need to re-exam a lot of things in your life.
and just ot make it relevant:
i think tyson has some good points in there. just because you won your AG (and congrats btw), doesnt mean you are doing it right.
he is pointing this out, and you are getting pissy. grow up.

Others may have a definition relating to all-out sprint speed or LT or something else. But your definition works for me. Sort of. Redlining will vary by the distance/time of the event. But even in a “sprint” triathlon, pacing matters. For example, as long as I don’t push the swim too much, I could get very close to my standalone TT power output for the bike leg of a sprint tri for the same distance, but the run would not be a pretty sight. Backing off 10-20 watts (i.e. not redlining it) is a much better strategy.
The point is that you cannot “redline” a leg of a triathlon at the same output as you can “redline” a standalone event of that distance. And it’s silly to try. And that’s why we started to goof around on the thread. It’s all in good fun.
