So I was reading the reports of the TT this past weekend, and I realized I have no idea how to train for the TTT coming to NC in Oct. I have tried to piece together a schedule but want input. Background on me…slow, and slower but able to complete 1/2 IM and iron distance within the time cut-off. And I am NOT 12% body fat and am cocerned now that I need to get the XXL tritop at the race. I don’t want that baby seal/burrito feeling on race day although I feel like that at every race I do.I am 51 yo and have a few ortho probs which can be problematic at times. I am always in the back of BOP and am OK with that. I don’t do tris for the clock, Forgive me!
Anyway, in a typical month, I thought I would have the recovery week a long swim focus with plans for a few 2 swims a day. Then, on the build weeks, do I have three different focuses? A weekend of multiple rides and short runs and the the next weekend of multiple runs and shorter rides.Or should I just concentrate on one long ride and run like for IM. As I add up the volume, this seems to be close to IM volume. Is there any plans out there for this style race?
I sure would appreciate any input to training for this race. I just finished a 1/2 IM this month so I am not too out of shape although I have a long way to go, I get that.
Are you doing a TT or a TTT? The latter is actually a team time trial and that would most likely mean you should work together with your team mates.
But for an individual TT, the best way to get faster is to do a training TT each week and you’ll slowly get faster as you get the pacing down. Maybe you can organize such an event with friends because competition makes you go faster for sure.
Oops, my bad. I thought you were talking about the Tour of California TT last weekend and somehow were doing a TT or TTT this fall. There are quite a few folks here on this forum who have done various Triple T tri events who should be able to answer some of your questions.
I am far from an expert on this, but leading up to the Ohio TTT I just ramped up the training volume, and made sure that I did some weeks where I covered at least 2.4 miles of swimming, 112 miles of biking and 26.2 miles of running all in the same week. I divided it up any way I could fit it in. Kind of an “Iron Week” I guess. Then when it comes time for the TTT you have to do the same volume of training over a single weekend. I say training and not racing because I think if you go at full on race speed by the end of the day on Sunday they may carry you off the course :).
As a recent SURVIVOR of the Ohio TTT, and teammate of said baby seal in a burrito wrap. It is my understanding that the NC event is much less challenging than the Ohio course. I looked at this past weekend as a monster training weekend and didn’t care about my times… and it showed haaa, had a freekin blast though! After the first two races I was all about doing the NC-TTT as well, after the third and fourth NO WAY! I would recommend training for this like an Ironman because that’s what type of effort its gonna take to complete it. Enjoy your race, HFP racing puts on the best events hands down!
Train like you are doing an IM, as others have written. Since this event is late in the season, the tris I assume you’ll be doing this summer will help you determine how to dose your effort over the weekend. That’s the key IMHO. I think the TTT in Ohio would be less brutal for most if it was in October rather than May. Have fun!
Thanks for the responces! I was hoping to get away with training at about 75 % volume for an IM. I want to have a little summer to play.
How important is it to do 2 bikes or 2 runs a day or is it OK to do one long session like you would for the IM? I realize the importance of moderate bike/runs back to back days but it sure would be “easier” to just do one long workout.
Thanks again, guys.
