I weigh 155lbs and just bought a pair of Zipp 808 clinchers. I’ve received mixed reviews about whether or not they can be used to train and race…or strictly just for racing. So…I thought I would poll the peanut gallery and see what you all think. Thanks
I do both on mine.
no reason you can’t train on them
if it is windy it would be annoying though
and if you broke one on a training ride it would be annoying =)
.
No matter your weight…ride em.
I actually had the same question because I was going to start to train on my Zipp 808’s until i got a pair of Easton tubulars for next to nothing. But i asked the same question in this thread:
as somone said, life is to short to ride crappy wheels
I don’t doubt your wheels will hold up on your training rides. I don’t ride on my race wheels for the simple fact that I like to see the speed difference when I change out my training wheels to race wheels. it is a little bit fun seeing your speeds increase when your output is the same in training etc.
enjoy them though, I am sure you are psyched!
if you want to look like the stereotypical ST tool training on a p3c with 808s, then by all means.
My powertap is built into my rear 808 so I do both even though I have a rear disc I could use for racing but I haven’t convinced myself that the disc is that much faster so it gathers dust. The 808 seems to be a good compromise for training & racing and I’ve never noticed any problems with wind pushing it (and me) around.

train and race on my 808’s as well no probs.
Depends on your budget. Zipp’s definately do break. I know two guys that have done it. For $200-300 you can buy bombproof training wheels.
