Hello all,
I will be spending next week (Feb. 23 till 27) in Griffin Georgia (approx. 40 miles South of Atlanta). If you know of any: pools, running or cycling routes and/or clubs I should check, please let me know.
regards,
Tom
Hello all,

Well, the good and bad thing about Griffin is that it is basically in the middle of nowhere. You can head out in any direction and once you get past the city limits, there will be miles and miles of good riding (flat to rolling terrain). I did a century late last year that went right through that county but I can’t seem to find any cue sheets or maps right now.
Another Century that comes very close to griffin is the Wilson 100 (http://www.wilson100.org/index.html). You can check out the cue sheet and map to see if any of that will work for you. I remember rolling over some of that course in October and it was very well marked.
Not sure about running and a quick search of swimmersguide.com turned up nothing ![]()
Good Luck!
All I will say is good luck. Keep your cell phone on you for your bike rides (assuming you get reception.) My bosses’ family is all up there, and he is as redneck as they come. No respect for cyclists or people who exercise. So if you get spiked with a beer can or a '85 Ford with 44" Super Swampers runs you off the road, dont say you weren’t warned. ![]()
Thank you for the input… I’ll take your advice and suggestions (and be careful)
Train strong, smart and have fun,
Tom
Ugh, Griffin. I haven’t been there in about 15 years but, if I remember correctly, it really is in the middle of the boonies.
The only thing I know of in Griffin is farmland and the UGA Extension center (I did some undergrad work there for a bit).
Just be cautious of the big trucks. I’ve had too many close calls in GA.
Yep, I grew up a bit north of Griffin, though long time ago. I still remember the day when I went to Bike South and got my first pair of cycling shoes - think I was 14 at the time. Went out for a training ride a few hours later, got hit by a car - coma, temp paralysis, lost sense of taste, etc. The problem is, if you get on some of those roads, you may not get a cell signal and cars may not be around if you run into trouble. There’s not much love for cyclists in those parts. Be VERY careful.
Can’t recall the name of it, but maybe check with the local bike shop, there might be some OK roads. Seem to recall there’s a shop in McDonough. There’s also a race or two “near” there, check out tribluesky.com and you may be able to find some race routes - granted there will be traffic, but from what I remember, they were out in the open and good sides to pull off on.

For a pool, there is an LA Fitness in McDonough that isn’t terribly far for you. Go to lafitness.com and use the search function. They also have cycling room that you can use anytime. I’ve done pleanty of bike workouts on a spinning bike before I had an indoor trainer.
