Training in Cape Town

Im staying in Cape Town for 3 months starting 17th JAN. I would appreciate all tips on where I can swim, bike and run. I mostly need swimming pool info. Also info on local clubs and races. My email is nikola at tosic dot com. Thanks!

It’s been a while since I lived in Cape Town, but running on Table Mountain (especially along one of the contour paths or the trail network behind the University) was always a highlight. Biking down the peninsula towards the Cape of Good Hope is also great, especially down the west side - hilly and scenic. But I think you will have to be very careful about personal security; I would not go out there alone.

You might look into the Two Oceans marathon (which I think is actually an ultra-marathon) and Two Oceans bike ride; I’m not sure what time of year those are but they are very popular events. Then there is IM South Africa (20 March?) in PE, which is only about 6 hours drive away.

If you are looking for sport clubs, look at Stellenbosch as well as Cape Town: S’bosch is a nearby university town, and erstwhile home to Conrad Stolz and Anke Erlank of Xterra fame; lots of good bikers and runners.

The Cape is a beautiful place - you will definitely have a good time there. Surfing is also great on either side of the peninsula, but the water is much warmer on the east (False Bay) than the west.

checkout the team squeeze website over the next few weeks. One of the guys, James, has taken 2 months off work to take a shot at qualifying for the AG worlds and is spending 2 months on a training camp with his g/f and other freinds near Cape Town. It is going to be more of a ‘fun’ few months training with anyone welcome, James will be posting a diary with pictures etc up once I get off my ass and finish the website, this week! Should be lots of info and a good read.

The Argus cycle tour (aka the two oceans bike race - probably the world’s most popular bike ride) (110k): 13 March. Two oceans 1/2 and ultra marathon (56k): 26 March. Google will get you to the details and entry forms. Both are terrifically scenic, well organized mega-massive events.

Tri-espana reminds me that some of the German bike aces (including, if memory serves me correctly, Jan Ulrich) train in the Cape, based on Stellenbosch, in the early part of the year.

Stellenbosch

Thanks know I can remember where they were going!
