So ?, Seems to be alot of debate on if its possible to train for all 3 the right way and still be if top form for all 3… I know alot changes for training for all 3 distances but i’d like some opinions on what yous guys think… esp from anyone specializing in sprint dis coaching. Thanks for your time…
Opinions? Ok.
First, Let’s call them what they are: Sprint, Long Distance, and Ultra-Distance.
Training to ***race ***all the distances in top form? No. Lasse Viren was one of the best in the world on the track at 5,000 meters, 10,000 meters, and the Marathon in the same week. But that’s nothing compared to a 9 hour or more Ultra-distance triathlon. So, No.
Short course vs Long course.
Im asking in others opinions, is it poss to train properly for all distances at once? Just a opinion, i know its not the ideal thing to do but ive done alot against the grain and just like to hear others thoughts… I will say that it seems more common for longer distance athlete to say no, and i never hear anything from sprint distances spec/coaches in the matter?
I’ve never done a sprint but have done all the other (regular) distances. My training is basically the same for all. If I’m going long I’ll throw in some long bike rides in place of some higher intensity rides. That’s about it.
The amount of time spent raining is roughly equal to the amount of time I have available.
Race pacing will be different, of course.
I’m not that fast, but in my last olympic distance I got second in my age group. Roughly 5 hours for a half and 12ish for a full.
I’m 41 years old.
Of course you can train for all 3 at once, you will be at your max volume anyway.
You will have to make a choice as to which race type will have the highest priority and train for that one. That means that it’s possible you could have been better at the other distance if you trained specifically for that one.

So what is the A race? What are you goals? No, I don’t think you can train the correct way and be in top from for all unless sprints are early in the year and the full in a later season race. If trained right - I think you can do well with sprints early in the season if the full is later in the year.
If the A race is a full:
You do a few sprints for fun/speed/interval days early in training. So you do a sprint in the morning followed by a run or bike in the afternoon. Or do a 10 mile run or so post sprint while waiting on the awards. Personally if A race is full, I would racing sprints 2 months out due to risk of crashing in some useless sprint and people doing stupid stuff.
Racing a half is great training 4 - 8 weeks from full.
Unfort i have 3 70.3 6 week leading up to placid, i may cut out the 3rd one depending how i feel… with that i said i race to train and my try it the right way this yr soooo im unsure at this point. I will say in 2010 i did 70.3 sat, 140.6 on sun, TT on tues, bike race on sat. 70.3 on sun all in same week an PR’d for all races except TT… Im not sure why but the racing is what drives me… But i am trying to do it right this yr…
