I am looking for anyone who has any experience training seriously for both running and triathlon at the same time. I don’t mean just for the run at the end of the tri, but for improvement and PRs in straight running races as well as improvement and PRs in Tris overall.
As it is now I am only running about 25-30 miles a week and have been hitting mid 15’s 5k and high 32’s 10k, while at the same time swimming about 5K a week and cycling about 75-100 miles per week. This is my first year of tris, and I have been improving on both the bike and in the water, but I’m not happy with my mediocre run times relative to my college PRs.
I know that I could up my mileage to the 70-80 mpw range and hit mid 14’s, low 31’s, but I’m worried that I would drop too much muscle mass for cycling and swimming. Right now I am 5’11’’ and 150. My race weight for running is about 140 - 142.
If I were to up the mileage would this definetly be detrimental to cycling/swimming or would I continue to improve assuming I maintained my training for the other two where it is now?
Anyone with any input?
