title pretty much sums it up. I have a 70.3 race coming up in August but will not be able to swim or bike for 4 weeks in July (due to travel) and will only get my bike and pool back about 2.5 weeks prior to the event.
What would you do training wise? Ride the hell out of my bike in June and just run as much as I can during these 4 weeks and do some stretch cord exercises? Any particular strength sets that I could do? Squats?
The race has a decent amount of climbing (3k ft ascent) and a flat run. I am also not new to low bike volume as I have trained for 70.3s with just one 2h ride per week before, but not nothing …
I got doored 6.5 weeks before I was supposed to compete at Ironman Kona back in 2011, and with a full cast on my left arm, I was unable to bike outdoors or swim. I shifted all my biking to the indoor trainer, and adapted my group circuit training to deal with the cast. I was able to run with the cast after about a week or so. The cast came off about 9 days before the race and I was finally able to swim, not well or fast, but good enough. I ended up having my best time at the distance at Kona.
If your outdoor bike is not available, at least try to find an indoor bike? And for a 70.3, we’re talking about swimming 25 to 40 minutes without having practiced for a while. You’ll be fine. Might not be your fastest time, but you won’t forget how to swim, I’m guessing.
Not sure what your situation is but I am always on edge for a last minute work ordeal. I have an old road bike and picked up a feedback sports trainer in the sales that are easy to travel with in the case of an emergency
…maybe I could rent. But I will have no gear at all…Based on the comments it sounds like I should really be more creative in finding a bike….maybe I’m oblivious but I thought if I ramp up my running, I could still maintain bike fitness….
