I’m moving into a new job and the hours are 3 on 2 off 2 on 3 off as a registered nurse in an emergency department. I’m a middle of the pack age grouper and training for my first half ironman in April. Do you guys think it would be OK if I only train on my off days or should I squeeze some training in on my days on that are 12 hour work days? Thanks for any thoughts.
It depends on your goals, constraints, and personal desire. I think it would be an interesting experiment, likely won’t hurt anything and might help. You will have to very focused on those “on” days. I would be curious to see how it all turned out.
However…if it were me I would probably try to get in something fast and expedient like a tempo run, a hard bike-trainer workout or a swim on the 3 day shift and rest on the 2 day shift, or at least try to get something in three days out of five.
