Training between FLIGHT transits?

So I’m going to have a LONG transit (about 2-3hrs) between two flights at Altanta airport.

I will not be reaching home till pretty late and I don’t want to take an UNNECESSARY rest day…

any suggestions?? Thanks guys!!!

All I know is you get funny looks if you do pushups in the waiting areas by the gates. I had 8 hours in the LA airport a few months ago. it was rather like purgatory - hellish, but you knew it was going to end. I ended up finding a quiet corner, putting in earplugs and curling up with my bag for a 4-hour nap. Sleep is a form of training, right?

any suggestions??

Stretch your legs by walking over to one of the restaraunts, buy a beer, and relax until your flight boards.

A day of flying can hardly be counted as a rest day, and skipping one day’s workout won’t kill you.

speaking from aviation expertise, I would not recommend running between flights due to DVT. and due to immune response reaction after training and your chance of catching something from some other sickie on one of your planes.

some walking and then sitting with your legs propped up or even better lying down will do you more good.

take a day off.

Geez…is it THAT BAD???

Man, I’ll probably have to make the training session the DAY BEFORE tougher/longer then…

Walk the terminal connector tunnel. Its a linear tunnel (walkway) that connects terminals a thru e. Most people take the trains between terminals, but you can walk it. I imainge its close to a half mile in distance and since all the lazy bastards take the trains almost no one walks it and you can walk at a good pace without running into congestion. There are water fountains along the walkway. You could easily run it without any problems, but it might draw attention to you that in today’s security awareness in airports, you might not want to deal with. Plus, what are you going to do with your carry-on crap. Its actually against the law to leave it anywhere, so you will have to carry it. At any rate, when I travel through Atlanta and have at least an hour layover, I always walk that terminal connector with my stuff in a backpack.

I feel your pain and luckily I don’t travel much for business anymore. No real good solution here, except to make the most of what you’ve got available to you.

Opt to take the stairs instead of the escalator/moving sidewalks. Carry ons work well as additional weight for hauling up flights of stairs which will work the legs more dynamically than you may do already. I thought I once read an article of airports having workout facilities, but never heard what happened to those, and that was pre September 11th… That kind of activity level should be safe from DVT or whatever compartment syndrome there is, and won’t stress out your immune system.

I enjoy keeping a brisk walking pace around the terminal and people watch as I go.

A novel idea is to grab that book you’re never going to finish because you’re always training and refresh the mind by reading it.

I’m surprised no one pointed out the obvious.

I don’t think whoever is sitting next to you on the plane would appreciate you boarding all sweaty and stinkin up the place.

I flew home from IMAZ on Tuesday ( 3 days after the race). On Thursday (5 days after the race) I flew from Cleveland to Houston - laid over one hour - then Houston to Seattle - four days later - Seattle to Houston - then Houston to Cleveland

With all the airborne germs on aircraft - there is little doubt in my mind why I have been sick as a dog for a week

take a walk around the terminals. read a book or take a nap

Ok guys.

So this is the verdict.

Walk, read, rest.

Alright. I could use the rest day I guess
