Anyone out there have any first hand knowledge of training and taking beta blockers at the same time? Just started taking them and wondered if anyone else is/has? As you know, sometimes doctor’s advice is tailored to people with mainly sedentary lifestyles… thanks.
Yes, my doctor put me on beta blockers a few years ago. My performance went down hill. I found every article I could in running, cycling, triathlon magazines and cut them out and took them to his office. I convinced him to put me an ACE inhibitor and have had no problems since.
Aloha,
Larry
Larry has a good doctor, and as long as it works, ACE inhibitors seem to be better for athletes.
Thank you----I was prescribed them for migraine headaches not cardiac issues but I will see what the dr. says. My resting heart rate is almost 20(!!!) beats lower than usual after being on them for one day! My running HR was the same as my usual walking/moving around HR- it was a bit scary.
The disappointing part was that I had to beg the doctor to let me use them. I even went as far as to ask him if it was a cost issue since I have a drug program with my health insurance. He didn’t like that comment. He is the same age as me (56) and I am in way better shape than he is, and yes he is the one that points that out to me. I tell him to get off his butt and folllow me for one year! :~)
Good luck.
Aloha,
Larry
A buddy of mine is 49 and used to be a 2:13 marathoner (1980 CDN Olympian) and now actively XC ski races. This winter he had a minor heart surgury, was on beta blockers of some kind and 9 weeks later won a 50K XC ski race overall. This guy has always been an animal, and although his first few races were a bit slower (he did not want to redline) after a couple of months he was flying. Don’t know all the medical details, but if you are interested, I can try and put you in touch with him. If you care, drop a private message and I’ll try and synch you up.
Thanks-but you have no private email listed in your profile…can you post it or send to me at mountainhermit@hotmail.com
