Training around Dana Point CA

I’ve got a couple of days worth of meetings in Dana Point next week - does anyone here know if it’s worth planning to ride in that area? I may have the option of staying a couple of extra days in the area - if so, is there somewhere nearby that I should look to stay in? The only reason to stay over would be to put in some miles in warmer weather than we’re currently getting in Ontario.

Thanks a lot,

G.

I like to ride from Torrey Pines State Park/Beach (between La Jolla and Del Mar) to Dana Point Harbor and back. That is 50 miles one way (100 mile ride). If you wanted something shorter you could ride Dana Point Harbor to Oceanside and back (about 60miles). Most of it is flat with short mostly small rollers along the coast and through Camp Pendleton (bring your drivers license to enter the base both ways - north and south). If you are in early season this is a nice ride as you will not be ‘worked’ by the relatively hillier east county riding but still get some good duration outdoors.

Watch out for those “REAL WIFES OF ORANGE COUNTY” up there. THey like to drink and drive!

Try TriBodyBoarder. Jay lives near there.

I live in San Clemente, and I’m exactly 5 miles from Dana Point Harbor and ride there alot. It’s a great spot to ride and a nice area to cruise in. Restaurants, nice beaches, etc. You can get in a good ride by heading south from DP through San Clemente, and as others have mentioned, into Camp Pendleton (with picture ID). As far as places to stay, there’s the Dana Point Marriott, some smaller motels here in San Clemente, and if you’re on a big budget, the Ritz Carlton and the St. Regis. Both beautiful hotels! Maybe I’ll see you out on the road!

What kind of access can you get to ride thru Camp Pendleton? I was curious about preview/training ride for IM 70.3 Oceanside… the website says no can do.

You can do the front part of the course that is closest to the beach, the section from Oceanside to San Onofre, all you need is valid ID, the back side is off limits.

Are there any trails for running near the Marriott? I have stayed there before, but the only running trails I found were concrete. Thanks.

You are allowed to enter the Base from the north at Las Pulgas Road with a picture ID. You can only ride on Stuart Mesa Road heading south, and then to Vandegrift and out the Main Gate in Oceanside. That’s a stretch of about 10 miles.
That’s basically the front side of the bike course for the race. The backside, which you AREN’T allowed to ride, is the real challenging part of the course during the race, but if you do hill training, you’ll be fine.

There’s a terrific trail system in San Juan Capistrano in the hills above the San Juan Hills golf course. You can reach the trails via a 4-mile run up the San Juan Creek Trail from Doheny Beach Park in Dana Point. I run those trails 4-times/week. It’s great! Awesome views, the occasional deer/coyote, and no one around.

thanks…I’m there the next two weeks and need to log some solid miles.

Thanks a lot, guys - that’s exactly what I needed.
