I am starting from zero to get ready for a du. Even though I am thinner then a year ago I am still fatty mcfatster. It is a little painful for me to run still so I was thinking of sticking to the bike until I have dropped the 30 pounds I plan on loosing. What do you guys think? Should I run any way?
Should I run any way? <<
My opinion? Yes. Walk/run. 30 minutes every morning first thing. Don’t worry about speed, just get out there. And fatty mcfaster will go away.

I second Cathy’s advice. I dropped about 30 lbs when I started this triathlon thing. The first run I did, I could barely go a half mile. Mixing in run/walk intervals helped me lose the weight faster, I think.
How fat are you? Running when really fat may be damaging to the joints. I lost more than 50 pounds in 5 months just through diet and biking. I was biking about 150 miles/week or more. However, when biking you have to be pedaling the entire time - if you’re coasting you may as well be sitting on the couch. Hard biking will burn more calories per hour than many other activities, but not as much as running - although it’s close. Once you lose the weight it will be easier to run. When I started running I lost another 10 pounds. You may find it easier to build up your running mileage as well due to your biking fitness, although it will still be difficult at the beginning.
The weight will come off fast if you diet and do the exercise. If you only exercise and don’t diet it will take substantially longer and same thing reversed. Most people fail because they give in to hunger cravings and fill up with the wrong foods. Fill yourself with water and fresh fruit, especially those high in water content. If you have the wrong/bad food in your house get rid of it.
Good luck.

I will 3rd this advice.
Start out walking, then move to walking with a little light jogging thrown in, etc etc. I just started training again after a 2 year layoff with basically no training. First time i ran I couldn’t believe I couldn’t run 2 miles, a month later I can run 10 miles again, it feels like shit and I hate it but I can do it. On the upside I ran 5 yesterday at lunch and it felt great, I’m starting to get my groove back.
I’d say focus on the biking… you’ll be able to do it for longer, more frequently, at a higher intensity from the beginning… I lost 40lbs in 3 months that way, basically doing 45min tempo sessions. You can run more later when there’s less risk of injury.
yes, run; and continue to bike. this will be great for weight loss! during the run when you need to walk, just walk! stretch; hydrate; eat well; rest. you’ll be tip top in no time.
I think you should get out there, for sure…HOWEVER, I also believe we feel pain for a reason, your body is telling you it isn’t ready for that just yet…If the pain goes away after a few minutes, then by all means, continue what you are doing, if it does not, slow down until it no longer hurts, you’ll get faster/thinner with time…Just don’t get discouraged, IT WILL HAPPEN!
I do think that you get more bang for your buck with running (burn more calories faster), but if that is killing the joints, do a similar activity that won’t hurt it (water jogging, elliptial, etc.), maybe even running trails/grass/track, to get off of the hard pavement might help too!
Best-o-luck!
No matter what your weight is, it’s gonna hurt when you start running. The run/walk suggestions are good…
Just dive right in and HTFU ![]()
