Without going into a lot of detail my Computrainer went belly up today. After 10 years of use probably deserves it.
Going ot buy a trainer while I decide what to do with the CT fix or upgrade.
Asked around and have received conflicting advice as to which type to buy. Was told do not buy fluid because when it heats up … no good. The mag trainer does not give good “road feel” Looking at the Blackburn UltrTrak which is neither.
I’ve used my roommate’s Nashbar magnetic trainer and my new Kurt Kinetic Road Machine (fluid). Of my limited experience I can say that the magnetic is quiter, but the fluid has a much better, more realistic feel. The Fluid resistance unit gets hotter, but that hasn’t affected anything. Kurt has a lifetime warranty so you don’t have to worry about it dying on you.
I say go with the fluid. The road feel is much nicer. You don’t need to mess with resistance settings- shifting will give you all the variety you need. The faster the tire moves the more resistance you get.
Tom has a deal going right now on a fluid. Check the classifieds.
I like my new cycleops pro 300pt. I have owned a computrainer, fluid trainer, mag trainer and wind trainer. This cycleops trainer is the best by far for indoor riding, but it comes at a cost of 1,899.00 retail (Ouch). The frame is way better than using a bike on a trainer. Very very sturdy. It also displays watts, speed, time, distance and all the other good stuff. The one thing it is missing though is the ability to race against yourself like you can on the computrainer. It also doesn’t adjust the resistance for you, but hey you can not have everything.
If you can not go that route with the cycleops, then get a fluid trainer.
