TrainerRoad training plans with Haliakela in mind

Hi.

Just booked my trip to Maui in early March, 50K of climbing. I have been doing the Traditional Base Mid Volume plan on TrainerRoad. Wondering if I should change to SweetSpot Base, or maintain Traditional and in February do some harder workouts. Any particular TR workouts suggested when I get to the quality efforts?

Thanks

Just driving up that thing made me tired.

Assuming you meant Haleakala and 10k feet of climbing?

Train for it like you would a 75 mile flat TT. That’s basically what it is…just constant pedal pressure for 3.5-4.5 hours (closer to 3 hours if you’re Cat1/2 or a twig). Other than the very short wall in Makawao, and the last quarter mile before the summit, none of the course is so steep that you can’t maintain your ideal cadence…assuming you are geared properly.

Just build up your FTP and make sure you get in some long rides. The real key to this climb is not going out too hard in the beginning. I know it sounds cliche…but the last 60% of the climb is harder than the first 40%…so if you blow your wad too early…there is nowhere to recover.

Agreed! Took forever to drive up to make the sunrise. Drove back down and windsurfed the rest of the day!! Good luck.

Very jealous, that sounds awesome. I think Jason nailed it, you’re going to want to look at it like a very long TT. Normally we always recommend Base, Build, Specialty. However, given your time constraints I would say jumping straight into Sweet Spot II and then getting right into the 40k TT plan would be the way to go.

I’m going to be there next week doing the climb, I will let you know how it goes. Since I’m from florida and we don’t have much to climb here I just have been long tt’s with 80% to 90% effort hope I can make it to the top. I will be going for about 5 hrs. But I do plan on taking as many breaks as needed to make it up that thing. Drove it last year and I will say you def have no chance on getting any rest while in the saddle.
