TrainerRoad 40k TT, Volume?

I’ve been using ERGvideos on my computrainer but recently got turned on to TrainerRoad for the 40k TT workout plan. There are 3 options (low volume, mid volume, high volume). How can I tell which is best for me? Time is not an issue, because realistically I have plenty of time to do any of these… but how do I know if high volume is just too much riding for my body? They’re 12 week programs, so I’d like to get it right the first time.

I started with the FTP 20 minute test and updated my profile to have my current FTP.

Thanks,
Ryan

The 2 hard workouts/week are exactly the same no matter what plan. The main difference is extra recovery rides and maybe a threshold type ride added in there. Otherwise they are basically identical. I’m about to start the high volume plan and will see if I can add some watts because winging it isn’t working.

You could look at the weekly TSS values for each of the 40k TT training plans (307, 400, or 534), and see how they compare to your recently weekly TSS from doing the ERGvideos (assuming you have been tracking your TSS). Then you could choose one that is the same as or a bit more than what you have been doing lately. For example, if lately your weekly TSS is around 350, you could probably do the mid-volume plan, but you might not want to jump to the high-volume plan.

high is best for you.

If your weekly TSS is 350 you especially want to jump to the high volume plan

Very cool. Let us know how the high volume plan works for you. You’re just the type of guy it’s written for :).
