Trainer is just too loud

So I wasn’t gonna race, but now am back at it - cycling only for now…here is my dilemma:

So I have a good trainer (Cycleops Fluid - few months old), and despite my best efforts, it is just too damned loud.

I did the following trying to alleviate the problem:

  • good trainer-specific tire - the orange Continental one
  • putting multiple layers of diff. thickness material under it (rug, wood, rubber pad, etc.)
  • cleaning my drivetrain
  • opened window so I dont need the loud fan
  • wore headphones to keep loud TV off

I know I have really thin floors in my apt. and that is the bulk of the problem, that being said, are ROLLERS much quieter??? I know it is a different animal in terms of training but I need something and just dont feel like fighting with my neighbors anymore…

Any other ideas???

i think my rollers about the same volume as my Kurt fluid trainer. Quieter than the mag that upset my neighbor. is it possible to work out a time when they wouldn’t be around that you can ride?

I had problems with noise… I have carpet in my room though…so I am not sure what you are working with.
I am not sure if you tried the rubber-wood combo… I bought a long sheet of plywood, put it on the floor and over that, I put these thick rubbermats - they sell them at Rona as heavy duty doormats and that really helped. Only downfall with those mats…the smell of rubber is strong for a month or so…

Plywood, carpet, cork, or rubber…anything that would help absorb sound and provide some sound attenuation.

I also have really thin wood floors and live on the second floor of an house/apartment. You don’t want to do anything with plywood or wood. Noise is spread through vibrations, and it will just travel right through wood.

Here is what i did
-Two pairs of bed sheets all folded up under legs (one for each leg)
-One rubber thicker rubber mat. A couple of towels under the main part
-And a pillow right behind (but not touching) the back of the trainer

If you have any cut out carpet, that will work really well, anything that cuts down on the vibrations.

I’ve got a blackburn trakstand that is VERY quiet compared to our other trainer (cycleops mag).
