Train then race in different shoes?

Just curious how many people train in one shoe and then race in another. (ie: train in a trainer then race in a flat)

kayano for training. ds trainer for racing.

I’d wager that most on the forums do this. I run in 3-4 different shoes during the course of 2 weeks. Might do some tempo/speed work in your racing shoes as most do.

I have always had a separate shoe for races. Currently train in Asics 2130, race in Asics DS Trainers. I will usually do one or two training runs in a shoe to make sure it will work for racing and then it is a race only shoe after that. Will usually do a run in them with socks, and then one without to make sure there is no hot spots that bother me on race day.

2130 train…brooks st racer race

I do most of my running in gel cumulus and Landreths, but some running and racing in speedstarts. Also run in some Nike’s when really cold/snowy/slushy out. I would run all the time in speedstars but it is cool to have something that feels lighter/faster to race in and they wear out a lot faster than the others.

Well, I’ll go against the grain here. I train and race in my Saucony Stabil 6’s. I feel like it is a good idea to race in the shoes that I am used to. Of course, I am also somewhat heavy and have poor biomechanics for running, so racing flats are pretty much out of the equation for me anyway. So I like racing in the shoes that I have become comfortable in for my training.

Most of my training is in Brooks Ghosts, or on the trails in trail shoes. I used to race in Pearl Izumi Streaks but now the new Brooks Racer ST4, or T6 Racer if it is something shorter.

Do people do this on the bike, too?

Got the road bike for training but not the same reason as shoes. Usually train on high traffic streets so it is a lot easier to handle. If I look back i say about 30-40% on road bike for training and rest on the tri bike. In a perfect world i’d like to have same tri bike setup as a trainer just not to wreck anything before a race. just as a back up.

Yes, we all do. You should buy a new pair of Asics for your bike.

Train road = Asics Kayano (for LSD) and DS trainer (for tempo & fartleks)
Train off road = Brooks Adrenaline 3 (love 'em love 'em love 'em)
Race = Asics Banditos

Oh, I meant using road cycling shoes. I have a pair of Specialized comps that I use for training…don’t see the point of training in my tri bike shoes. Totally understand your bike ideas. I actually use a clunky tricross for city riding (fail)…

Hot Tamales: okay, I loled at that. Very good.

I had 2 exactly the same setup Zipp 2001’s. The only difference was the front chainrings. Compact on the training frame and a 53-39 on the racing frame. But I’ve since sold one of the Zipps to make way for my new bike. Keeping one of the Zipps for the wall!!

I race in Zoot racing flats and train in Asics.

I even have a training aero helmet and a racing aero helmet : )

I will wear my racing flats for the occasional speed-workout of marathon-pace run but otherwise, I train in different shoes.

I train in 2130’s and race in DS trainers.
