Today, one of its young stars, Phillip Hughes has died as a result of being struck in the head by a ball on Tuesday. The cricketing world is in shock at this outcome and it’s not clear what effect this will have on the upcoming First Test between Australia and India.
By all accounts, one of the most liked players in the country. Sad that his mum and sister were in the stands watching when it happened.
Hard to believe it took 22-25minutes for an ambulance to get there (after the call) when the nearest ambulance station is 800m away. Though I don’t know enough about the injury to establish whether anything could have been done regardless.

RIP Phil
A freakish accident & a real tragedy.
He was attended on the field where fhe fell by a team doctor who had the full range of trauma & emergency equipment within moments .
It’s not as though nothing was done until the ambulance arrived
Would the earlier arrival of paramedics and their “transport vehicle” have made any difference? probably not.
Neck guards? Won’t happen. Any protection for the neck/back of the head would reduce mobility, and therefore reduce the batsman’s ability to duck out of the way of other similar deliveries. This was a once-off - a tragic one, but a once-off all the same. Neck guards that offer any level of protection would end up causing more head impacts than they protect from.

Yeah, nothing will change as far as protection goes. How many millions of balls are delivered around the world each year? It would be crazy to consider such a drastic move after one incident, no matter how tragic.
