Can help in understanding how a particular muscle got to its state of unhappiness. A lot of what ails us isn’t caused by our sports, but rather by the rest of our lifestyle (driving, sitting, poor posture, etc.). Also makes an important point that stretching a muscle that’s loaded with trigger points can be futile until you’ve deactivated the trigger points.
To complete your set of self-abuse (er…self-massage) tools, you might want to consider a TheraCane as well. I have one and love it. The above book utilizes it as a tool for working on trigger points.
Very expensive for stuff that a tennis ball and a $15 foam roller can do.
They are sort of like vitamins and supliments…you really never know of they do anything. I use the calf roller on the block for the soleus, then for the bottom of the foot and the quad roller for the ITB, both as part of a normal stretching routine. Don’t know if they work, but do know that they are waaaay overpriced vs. the alternatives.
I have the tennis ball and a foam roller as well as the TP Massage Ball kit.
Tennis Ball has not been used since but I still use the foam roller for my quads as the TP Massage products get too deep and the pain is too intense.
Relieved me of my 18 month calf strain that 3 Massage Therapists could not cure.
I have only tried the TP massage ball in a store, and decided not to purchase it because I had a lacrosse ball at home that I thought would work exactly the same. I found the lacrosse ball, so it was free, and completley relieved my back pain. Don’t know about the other stuff though, but I was happy to have saved $25.
Excellent package. The cost may seem high, but (as others said) if you use it regularly it makes athletic life so much better. I use the footballer for keeping the feet from PF issues and work the calves alot which has helped an untold amount. The quadballer has helped with quads and minor ITB issues. These “exercises” can be pretty intense (read painful), but what you get out of it is amazing; feels so good when you stop. You can go the cheaper route, but like anything else, you get what you pay for. The more I use it, the less issues I have.
I use the quad roller every night. It works miracles on my quads/ITB. I use tennis balls for other areas (back). I’ve never tried the TP massage ball. Tennis balls work fine for me. Buy a new can of tennis balls every 2 months.
I have the set. The ball is the best of the bunch. But all are good. It is firmer than a tennis ball, so it gets deeper. Definitely money worth spending.
