I just flipped to Versus randomly and saw they’re broadcasting the first day of the ToM. Until now I had never even heard of this race, but it looks like a lot of the major teams are there.
Anybody know how interesting this race gets?

This is a great race. . . The past two years it started in Kansas City and went down both years to catch the action. Even got my picture taken with Hincapie last year. . this year it ends here in KC. . . Plan on heading down and catching the race. Hope to get some more photos. . .
I was there. Was a lot of fun. 10 laps, 75 miles. The riders were doing autographs and mingling with the spectators during warm ups. One of the boys with us was given a hat and water bottle from one of the riders. Last year one of the riders also gave him a hat.
I was about 50 m from the finish line right on the rail and Cavendish was incredible. Up hill finish and he was flying. Love to see the power he was generating.
I did go over to see his bike and he had widest stem I have ever seen.
The time trial is Friday in Sedalia. Unfortunetely have a funeral and will not be able to attend.
The event yesterday was very well attended. They had about 30 tents from various local merchants set up.
Just read that defending champ Christian Vande Velde is out after a crash yesterday…I was really looking forward to seeing him Time Trial…Bummer

Bummer. That dude’s been having a lot of bad luck with crashes lately.
Any idea how badly he was injured in the crash? (obviously enough to quit the race)

It’s probably the second biggest race in the US–Tour of CA being the biggest. Probably doesn’t get a whole lot of attention because the time of the year. Heck the Vuelta barely gets any attention and its a Grand Tour. I think once the TdF is done, most people forget about cycling.
Indeed. I was surprised to see so many big names racing there. I would have figured they would all be racing the Vuelta.

Glad you’re paying attention to the second biggest American cycling race you hadn’t heard of two days ago. Our Governor threatened to cut funding for the race (title sponsor is the state of Missouri) because you’re not the only one. Maybe the teams decided to show up and support a race that will surely disappear without their presence.
I second the motion that Jens sounded well in his interview and looked good momentarily leading the race.

for anyone who really follows cycling tactics, yesterday’s stage was phenomenal riding by test team and the others. if the columbia train gets rolling then cav is almost the automatic winner. a few different teams got together to disrupt it, and columbia wasn’t able to regain control of the leadout. awesome tactics to get over the top.
Cav had dropped out of the race, so he can’t win!! : ) Lung infection.
