Gerald Ciolek of T-Mobile won his third sprint finish in a row, and Jens Voigt took his second Deutschland Tour in a row, in Saturday’s finale. Ciolek outsprinted Erik Zabel, of Team Milram, and Mark Renshaw of Crédit Agricole.
There were no changes in the overall classification. Voigt won at 1’57" ahead of Discovery Channel’s Levi Leipheimer, with David Lopez of Caisse d’Epargne 2’10" back in third. Voigt called the victory harder than last year, as it was unplanned in 2006. “This year, I had said beforehand I wanted to contest the general classification.”
Zabel won the sprinter’s jersey without much of a contest, as his biggest rival, Jose Joaquin Rojas Gil of Caisse d’Epargne, who was equal on points with Zabel, decided to not start the stage and save his legs for tomorrow’s Cyclassics in Hamburg. Zabel’s team-mate Niki Terpstra took the mountains classification jersey, also without contest as the flat roads around Hanover offered only one category three climb. The team ranking went to CSC and Rabobank’s Robert Gesink was the best young rider.
