Tour of California - TT = No Aero Water Bottles?

Okay, I wasn’t at the TOC TT race, but watched most of it on VS. and I’m wondering why I didn’t see anybody with aero water bottles (except for some pictures of Lieto, I saw he had one)?

They are aero with everything else, but they use regular water bottles on the bikes?? These are pro teams who can easily afford it…there are plenty of aero bottle options out there with Specialized, Bontrager, Arundels, etc.

I was just wondering if anybody knows why they don’t use them??

Seriously? in a TT? no way a water bottle is needed. You aren’t for a split second gonna take your hands from the bars unless it’s to change to the outside for cornering and back to aero and I highly doubt anyone is gonna dehydrate in one 45 minute charge. plus the excess weight it adds.

in short there is simply just no need, no logical reason to have one in a TT. I haven’t seen one at least.

funny, but people are talking about the speed box on the concept making the bike more aero so I’m left wondering if an empty aero water bottle would make a bike more aero in which if that is the case than I haven’t a clue.

My experience has been that round bottles are easier to manipulate when aero, resulting in less time out of the aero position. Could be one reason.

I am pretty sure that it’s a UCI thing. But unless it’s really hot, you don’t need a water bottle for a 40+ minute TT.

Im going back through my pics right now looking at the rigs and about half the riders had water bottles (Schlek, Horner, George…) while the big guns (Levi, Rodgers, Fabian, DZ…) didnt have bottles.

Levi Leipheimer took a swig off of a water bottle in the start house, and if I recall correctly, he then put it on the seat tube.

I was surprised by this as well.

All these super aero bikes, and then quite a few round water bottles.

Of the riders shown on VS I would guess 1/3 were carrying a bottle.

I noticed that too. I was assuming that they were using normal water bottles because of their sponsors, but that’s just a guess.

Or just personal preference. I interchange between regular and an aero bottle as the tri season progresses but always find it easier to handle a regular bottle. Easy out and more importantly easy back it.
