Jan Ullrich won the first stage of the tour de suisse.
It was a very unusual first, mainly flat, stage.
First a group of 37 broke away, then 5 went for it… Ullrich, Camendzind, Zampieri, Garcia and Jeker.
The 5 rode alone for the last 30k… never further ahead then 45"… they managed to hold 15" and Ullrich was strongest in the sprint.
The main field including Simoni and Garzelli lost 10 minutes…
Considering that the 3 Suisse probably would´ve liked to be in gold in theier home country it is unlikely that they gave away the win for easy.
Although it doesn´t say much about overall form right now… it shows that Ullrich is confident… and knows about the importance of the mind-game leading up to the grand boucle…
