Tour de France on Computrainer

I don’t think they have it, I think it would be really cool if DeLorme/Computrainer had topographical maps of the TdF stage routes. It would be fun to try out some of the same courses and get a feel for how incredibly hard some of them are. You could try to ride the course in sync with the OLN broadcast and find yourself instantly dropped from the Peleton.

Problem is that on the CT you cannot coast downhill. In real life you do. Imagine killing yourself going up a virtual Galibiere or Izouard and then having to pedal down to the base to catch the peloton …

You’re right, but it would be “fun” to try out some of the climbs.

According to CT’s website, if you send a road map of a course to their office(attn: Ray David), if they have the time to do it they’ll create it and put it on the wbsite to be downloaded. You may want to email them and see if the Tour is in the works.

It would be fun to see how far behind I would be.

I think there’s a CT course of L’Alpe d’Huez floating around on the internet somewhere. I don’t have it but I’m pretty sure I’ve seen it.

A buddy of mine did the CT Alpe D’Huez course…word of caution if you do so, please direct a fan at your CT. With the slow speed that you climb and the high wattage through the entire climb, you may blow out your CT motor due to overheating, as its “self cooling feature” does not work so well at low speed.

If any slowtwitchers are at Alpe d’huez to watch the TdF TT, I’m hanging around for a couple of days afterwards and will TT the real course myself !

I called Ray at Computrainer and he said DeLorme doesn’t have European maps to make the courses yet. However, he did say that several courses were listed on links from the CT site, i.e. some Euro-Ironman courses and the Alp d’Huez (sp?) and Mount Ventoux (sp?). He also suggested to use a fan on the resistance unit when doing long, steep, sustained climbs for many miles.

I would think that you could go to the Tour website to get maps and elevation changes to make a CT course. But, what do I know.

If you are planning on doing Alpe D’huez or Mt. Ventoux, better rest the day before.

The first time I did MV I crashed and burned about mile 10. I had ridden 60 hard the day before.

Paul,

You are correct. Richardson Bike Mart here in Dallas hosted a Alpe d’Huez climb and during one of the “sessions”, they forgot to put a fan on the “loader” and blew it up. I also believe Computrainer has pulled the program from their stash of rides.

You can find lots of cool 3D courses and the Alp d’Huez course in PC1 form at:

Thanks, I will certainly check it out!

It is “Galibier” and “Izoard” ;).
