Tough IMLP attire question

So its just about time to really decide how I want to dress for my first IM…I have a question for those of you that have Assos Bibs.

I love my Assos Bibs - so incredibly comfortable on those long rides. It really is a treat to ride in them so I figure that maybe this is my best option for the bike leg at IMLP. I was going to wear a fullsuit to save a few minutes in transitions but after riding today in the fullsuit I just think that the comfort may be more important for me at this time…so, the big big question for those of you that know.

Have you ever pee’d in your Assos bibs? I ask because the padding is so nice and cushy and thick that I’m wondering if I’d be extremely uncomfortable while sitting in my pee. I’m wondering if the fluid will dry up in these bibs like they would in a race suit or race bottoms with the dry wicking pad/material. So, what are your thoughts?

Dave

That’s assuming you will actually pee while biking:-) That would be a HUGE step!!!

if you are going to spend that much time changing clothes why pee in them ?
just stop and pee

I don’t think their is any comfort in riding in pee in any shorts.

  mom would frown on it.

Well you might find you like it .
If so you are just aahaaahhh weird ;+)

just say no to peeing in shorts and riding in them!
Life is just to short for that kind of thing.
Some of us with long ,long, very long you know whats can just run it out the leg and that works.
but sitting on a wet bib for 100 stinking miles

wet suit well thats another story ha ha
I never have found a jiffy john on the swim course

Dirt

Roll up the pant leg, slide your boy out, stand up holding the left bar with your left hand, right hand holding your boy, right leg down, left leg up, pee on a downhill like a roadie, pull your boy back in, roll the pant leg down and you are done without barely losing a second and your shorts will be dry.

See ya on the course…just don’t pee on me :-)…but don’t stop to pee. If you stop 5 times on the bike that’s 5 minutes you lost…how much did you train to shave 5 min off the swim or bike?

Dev

Tough call (I love the Assos bibs as well).

First IM - I changed into bike shorts, then run shorts

2nd IM - one piece full suit the entire way

for Placid, you are up and out of the saddle a lot with the hills (if you want that is) and I was fine. For FL, might want to change! I’d just give a few more rides in the one piece, maybe try out a DeSoto neoprene cover, and go. The tents for MOPer men are BRUTALLY busy unless you plan on swimming under an hour or over 90 mins

Is this your first IM?

What kind of time are you shooting for?

Dave won’t put a goal time down but he is a 4:33 half IM guy… I am trying to get him to wear a tri outfit but he keeps saying that the difference with the assos is like a coach and first class seat on an airplane (he is a pilot)!!! This is his firstIM.

Roof I agree with you, except i would do 2 piece but that is just me!

Assuming the 4:33 course was similar in difficulty to LP, and he has put the training in, that puts him at 2x4:33+60 = 10:06 :-).

My bibs are Beragamo, and I changed into them at CdA after the swim, and pee’d in them at mile 70 or so. No big deal-it goes down your leg depending on how you position wally, and into your shoe not in your pad. But make sure you move your water bottle so you’re not peeing on it, and don’t pee until you have a fresh one to wash with. A good spot to pee on the LP course is at the downhill in the Hazleton out-and-back. It’s right after an aid station, and there’s a false-flat decent to the hill.

It’s much nicer doing an Ironman in bibs if that’s what you train with. They are tough to get into after the swim, and I don’t know what it’s like to be in a crowded T1 tent (drive-by gloat :P) but if there’s a volunteer helping you, you’ll be fine. Also, make sure you have a speedo under your wetsuit. If not you’ll be naked in front of about 8,000 people.

Dev, I can’t believe you pee 5 times on the bike!

Dave won’t put a goal time down but he is a 4:33

All things considered then, he may be looking at a 10 - 11:30 IM time. Which is not shabby.

  1. I am guessing that most people in this crowd will be going with tri-shorts the whole way for swim/bike/run

  2. I am also guessing that for this guy he will be hitting the change tent when it is absolute chaos - so the fewer changes the better

  3. As for peeing - so many triathletes make shuch a big deal out of this. If you wear tri shorts you can either do what Dev suggested, pee on the fly or just stop - how long does it take?

  4. As another suggested, try one of the neoprene saddle pads. They really do make a huge difference.

  5. Agreed - two piece is much better for Long course racing. Easier for the bathroom breaks and also gives you more flexibility for layering if it’s colder.

…no, I only have to go twice on the bike at most. But I have heard of others hydrating like nut and going every hour or so!

Ok…5 times, that must be people with coffee in their bottles. On the run it’s hard to stop and go because it’s so hard to get going again. At CdA, I just held it.

I have heard of others hydrating like nut and going every hour or so!

Tyical triathletes - always overdoing it!

I think people have been watching to much of the tour…Unless you are really looking to save 30 seconds do yourself a favor and stop to pee in stead of sitting in a urine sponge for five+ hours…but hey knock your sox of if thats what you wanna do. See ya Sunday…ill be the one without a urine rash and my back to the road peeing like a grown up.

Thanks for the in-depth reply on how men do it, but my wife is interested in hearing how SHE should go about peeing and leaving the pad dry…any ideas?

Any suggestions from the women? Is it even possible?

Thanks!

yes Dev how does she do that ha ha ha ???

You want to know how women pee on the bike, you gotta ask a woman :-).

I ride Assos shorts usually, but LG trisuits for IM races. Dont notice any discomfort although there is minimal padding.

I really draw the line at peeing on my bike though ! In the swim - yeah - all over my bike, bottles and shoes ? Yuk !

.

it’s easy, you just pee… nothing complicated, easily done
