Total immersion in St. John, VI, too expensive

All of us who swim were very excited about the one week clinic brought to us by the total immersion people scheduled for May on our island. The clinic is to be held one week before the world class Beach to Beach power swim race. But the price of the clinic is not going to allow most locals from participating. $895.00. Is this a normal price for a clinic?

How long is the clinic? Most 1-day clinics cost in the $200 range, but perhaps whatever facility theyre using makes it more expensive for them… Where will it be? My family and I will be down in April for our 10th annual trip to STJ… cant wait to swim maho every day!

The clinic is a week long, about 4 hours a day. It’s going to be held at maho bay. You should think about doing the beach to beach power swim someday, since you guys seem to be regulars to our island. It starts at maho and goes all the way to Hawksnest. It’s 3 different courses: you can stop at Cin. Bay, Truck, or all the way. And it’s only about $30 or $40.00 bucks.

My first reaction to that price was “Holy Cow!!!”

With that said I feel that with adults learning how to swim, it takes months to learn what they are telling you will learn in just a week.

Trying to retain all of the good info they give you might be better drawn out over many weeks by a masters coach. You could work with a coach for a day then use what he/she tells you to do for a whole week. Go back the next week, have them watch you again, give you something else to work on, do that all week then repeat.

If you are looking to magically improve you swimming in one week you may be dissapointed with the short term focus.

If you are the type of person that analyzes every thing that you do all of the time and can remember each step they teach you, you will probably have a very good chance of using their system and improving you swim over the next few months.

If you go the total immersion route, keep a journal about every swim session and use that information/feelings to help you in the next several weeks of your training. Also, report back here and let us know how it worked out for you. I’m sure many of us will be interested in your reactions to the weeks’ training.

Wow, thats the same as one hour in a wind tunnel with Joe Friel! Im amazed at what kind of income people have.

I agree with all your points about the “adults learning how to swim”. I’m actually an ok swimmer and have a few ironman championships in my swim suit. I guess I got excited about having a coach here. We certainly don’t have a master coach, we don’t have a pool. So, everything I have done has been on my own. It’s not fun doing swim drills in the ocean. It’s hard to figure out what 25 or 50 meters is. And waves can be a problem. I use no wake buoys as my interval markers. Or the coconut tree on the beach as a marker. I am going to contact with total Immersion people, to see if they would do a one day clinic for poor locals. And I am one of those people who will hang on every word that is said. I’ll let you know the out come. thanks.

The rate at TI headquarters for a coach is $90/hr so if you know the class size, you can figure out if it’s “normal”.

“There’s a sucker born every minute”

Buy the book do the drills over and over and save.

Are you calling me a sucker? If you had not included that remarker, I would have welcome your 2nd feedback. which I have already done. Now I just think you are a jerk. I just wanted to know if this is the going rate for clinics. I certainly would never spend all that money on a clinic.

Not sure what the class size is? I have to check it out. They don’t have to rent anything. If think the ti people are counting on off island people. thanks
