Nice! We tried without training wheels last night with our almost 4 year old (3.994 if I do the math). Failed, too many distractions and other things going on, will try another night without other kids watching or trying to ‘help’.
We kind of did a hybrid method, balance bike and pedal bike with training wheels. I think she is really close.
So major mistakw was buying it yesterday afternoon with the wheels on
I said i was taking them off or taking it back as she has the balance cracked
Hysterics
I did it anyway
In fairness she is persistent. Very frustrated last night and again this morning
Went for lunch with friends and she wanted to try on her own
She cracked it
She cant hold brakes. Foot at 2pm push and get other foot on.
She starts balance bike style and gets feet on to pedals quickly much faster than last night
I set up a slalom in the drive with a u turn and she made it once one way
Kids are amazing…
Healthy kids. Its all i really want. The rest is broadly BS (bit pissed (drunk) and bit melancholy)
Color me jealous.
My oldest is 7 and still can’t. She almost had it two years ago as we transitioned from the balance bike, but I wasn’t persistent enough. We recently moved to an area where there are more places to try so I am going to restart the process. My younger is influenced by the fears of her older sister.

Ohh man… ( you started this:)
So my lil lady was riding two wheels at exactly 3rd birthday! (after only 4 weeks on the balance bike!!)
Same lil girl was skating by 4 yrs. Now 7 and dominates ~80% of the boys ( let alone girls) that she plays hockey against
Have I mentioned soccer yet:) Soccer season rightnow up here in Great White North and she completely destroys the local U 8 girls league -as a 7 yrold!! Scores at will( I have to shut her down after 5 goals unless of course we are losing so as not to upset the other parents::)) No idea what we’ll do next summer when she actually turns 8!!
So … I could go on but yeah… txs for starting the ’ parent brag 'thread. Wife and I teach our two kids not to boast about their exploits on the sporting fields and my girl sometimes reminds me not to brag about her but told her that the rule doesn’t apply to parents . They’re allowed to brag about their kids… lol
It’s definitely easy after they’ve been on the balance bike. My daughter was the same age and tiny. All I had to do was explain how to pedal.
We had hysterics but i said you ride without training wheels or we take it back. Its not a discussion
We have many kids issues with my 3 year old. All of which i take responsibility for as we made choices but this really does cheer me up…
I am genuinely really pleased for mine (and yours ;))
Mine has moved 3 countries in the last 12 weeks which is causing all sorts of stability issues
She is now in france and speaks better french than me but is really disconcerted by the moves, the family changes…
The bike thing is awesome. Riding a bike is a huge freedom thing…
I bet her seat’s too high.
That’s awesome! My 3.5 year old won’t even touch her balance bike, just sits on the bike with training wheels but won’t even attempt to turn the pedals. But she’ll dance non-stop.
It sounds like yours has had a tough few months, but cheers to a victory for both of you! I bet you won’t be able to get her off the bike for a bit. It might be time to take a ride to the ice cream shop, eh?

Good work! We had our youngest up and riding at about 3 and a half as well, older one took until around her 5th birthday thanks entirely to my wife letting her use stabilisers/training wheels. Balance bike is the way to go… Youngest is now 4 and a half and has done an 8 mile ride (with ice cream stop), 6 year old has done 20 miles in a day, I’m loving the freedom of being able to just head out with the 2 of them and actually get to some places without having to get in the car.
If you haven’t already, check out Islabikes. Those things are awesome for kids, nice and lightweight and have proper components instead of the crap you get on cheap kids bikes. Pretty pricey but they hold their value so well that I just buy good secondhand ones off eBay, then sell them on for similar money when the girls grow out of them. Currently on our 3rd and 4th Islabikes, and I turned a small profit on the first 2. Frog Bikes seem to be pretty similar and slightly cheaper.
Nice!! My grand-nephew just turned 3 yesterday and he’s been riding his balance bike pretty much daily most of the day around the house since Christmas. When he’s outside with Dad, they are usually on the minibike or hoverboard.
Now the real question, can she stop? Or does she put her feet down to skid to a stop.
She uses the brake excessively
She stops properly. What she does not do is start properly. She pushes like on a balance bike then looks down to get feet on pedals. I think 2 days in she gets her feet on 90% of time after 1 push but she can not start with a foot on the pedal and its annoying me
Just remember, they are HER achievements, not yours. You had your chance.
Balance bikes really have been a great asset for fast tracking learning to ride a real bicycle. I seem to recall being about 6 years old when I learnt, maybe a fraction earlier. My oldest boy would have been 6. My daughter was probably closer to 5 and our youngest was a week shy of being 4.
Another great asset was a grassed back yard with approximately 2 foot of fall. You can set them off then run in front of them and tell you to pedal after you. Though the grass offers cushioning for potential falls it also makes it tougher for small legs to pedal across. Once the youngest got the confidence it was off to nannas to ride on their concrete tennis court. Stopping and starting then became the tasks. The balance bike usage meant a tendency to drag the tips of nice shoes on the concrete. Took him about an extra week to figure out the starting concept properly.
It’s a really enjoyable moment watching your children transition through that milestone.

I’m still waiting… My 5 year old just got the hang of the balance bike last winter. He will ride his pedal bike with training wheels more now (but only up and down the block).
I’m pretty sure both kids will be riding at the same time (5 & 1).

Absolutely!
