Is there any maximum torque when fastening quick-release wheels? I heard some nasty sound like bing! when I tightened my rear wheel on my P3C, might have tried a little too tight. I certainly hope it came from the spokes, but none was broken. Can the quick-release lever cause any damage to the carbon fork or frame?
The cervelo owners manual actually discusses this a little. The general rule of thumb is that the quick release latch should start to apply pressure to the frame when it is half way closed (sticking straight out). Any more than that may apply excessive force to the frame. Can it damage the frame… yes, but it’s not very likely.
you’ll break the quick release itself, or possibly the hubs depending on the wheel design, well before you damage the frame or dropouts. remember, on the vast majority of frames, the dropouts are solid metal. the ones that aren’t solid metal are solid carbon, not too many of those around.
Ok. I didn´t find any mention of it in the cervelo manual, but usually the manuals just mention the importance of applying adequate torque. I didn´t see any cracks and been riding about 200K now, hopefully it was the spokes that caused the noise.
