Torn pec

Who has experience with a torn pec? I tore mine last Saturday. I’ve had an MRI and I’m meeting with our orthopedic in the morning to see the results and discuss options.

wrong forum

sorry to hear. Can’t help you, but I hope it heals quickly or can be fixed surgically or something.

how did you tear your pec sitting at a computer?
you must be really clumsy.

Wrong forum? It’s not tri related. I haven’t done anything with triathlon in over a year. So I figured I’d post it here. But it is sport related and it will affect triathlon if I decide to resume the sport. So maybe it is more relevant to post it in the main forum. And yes, it can be fixed “surgically or something “ but I was looking for specific experiences from people who had been through this - pros and cons of surgery v no surgery, length of recovery, post injury strength, performance, etc.

I tried to type a ? with my right hand. Hitting the shift key and the ? with the same hand was simply too much . . .

We’re giving you shit.
😜

Maybe similar to what you have…maybe not…I wrecked my bike and fractured my clavicle 7 years ago; I also tore the tendon that connects your pec to your collarbone.

They plated my clavicle and used a teflon cord to repair the torn tendon. Basically one end of the cord is attached to the plate; the other end is attached to my pec. Recovery short term was 12 weeks but it took several years before it really “felt” normal. It didn’t impede my life, but I was very aware of it for a number of years. Even now if I try and lift something in a particular way I can feel “stuff” pulling in there. All in all, it is not a big deal.

Search this forum, pretty sure I talked in detail about it when I ruptured my pec tendon and tore the muscle three years ago.

Long story short, they screwed the tendon back on my humerus, the muscle belly healed, and I’m back to full strength and symmetry with a scar and a story to show for it.

Yeah I know. I understand and appreciate a good light-hearted electronic trash talk. I’m good with it.

Interesting. That’s what I’m looking for. I tore something in mine last Saturday. I had an MRI Tuesday, was supposed to meet with orthopedic this morning. However, the hospital sent the wrong images to the doctor. They have images of my shoulder but not my pec. So now I’ve got to wait on the correct images to get to the doctor. This guy is the team doc for our high school football team and we’ve got a game tonight. So with him getting ready for that, Labor Day, and the threat of another hurricane moving in, it will be at least Tuesday before I know the real damage. But I don’t have any deformity and I still have a remarkably full range of motion. I heard the muscle tear when it happened – sounded like someone tearing a giant sheet of Velcro. The bruising is down my right bicep, not on my chest. I’m hoping there’s no tendon damage and I can get through this without surgery. However, the images on my shoulder did show a partial tear of my right labrum and rotator cuff. Those are old, undiagnosed injuries that I never knew were there.

What were you doing when this happened? Pec ruptures typically happen with explosive exercises, almost universally bench press. That’s how I tore mine. The bruising down your bicep strongly points to a tendon tear, but if there’s no deformity it’s only partial. can you describe exactly what you were doing and what you felt, that would likely give a good indication of what damage is done. You may need a partial repair to reattach the tendon, or it may be a small enough portion that it’s not worth going in for.

pectoral muscle belly tears are the ones that are difficult to repair and almost always leave deformity when they heal. I was fortunate in that I only had a slight tear of the muscle belly, while the majority of the damage was that the tendon insertion site on the humerus. Two screws and a plate, and a few months of rest, and rehab, and I was pretty much back to normal by the end of the year. It sucks, it requires patience, something I find in short supply.

you might get more help on the tri forum

I was benching, of course. The weight was heavy but it wasn’t a one-rep max. I lowered it and as soon as I pushed upwards, I heard something in my right pec tear. It sounded like someone had a big sheet of Velcro and ripped it apart. No one else heard it. I have video of it and you can’t hear anything in the video. There was no bruising until the next day. I’m hoping it’s a partial muscle tear that will heal without surgery. There’s no deformity or anything like that. You can’t tell anything has happened unless you see the bruising on my upper arm.

Same here, bench press 225 on my second or third of what was going to be 6 to 8 reps. I pushed up got about 2 to 3 inches from my chest and it sounded like a handgun pop. Searing hot pain, but deep ache that I couldn’t escape for hours even with narcotics. I’m certain everyone around me heard It in addition to hearing me help. It was rough. Probably worse than childbirth, but I really can’t be certain.
