Topofusion GVSS question

OK, so I downloaded the trial version and read the stuff on the topofusion site about GVSS. Sounds interesting. I have imported about 5 runs into the software and am starting to play around with it a bit. I can’t seem to find enough detail on the web page or help to explain how to set up the GVSS properly. On the run analysis form, how do I get the GPS data into the form. It seems to put 10K in as a default. Looks like I can manually enter it I suppose. Then, once the test data is in there for a run, how does it know that subsequent runs are not tests, but are only training runs. THis stuff is not really explained sufficiently on the web page. Anybody out there using it and can shed some light on how it works? Thanks a bunch for your help.

Hi Mike,

I guess I should answer, since I developed GOVSS.

First: You don’t need to use 10k. You can enter any distance you like into the form. Elite / Pro / Real Fast People can use 15k since that will be closer to 1 hour pace. However, whatever distance you use, KEEP USING THE SAME DISTANCE. In other words, don’t use a 10k run for half the season as your test and then change over to a 15 or 20k run. Be consistent.

Next: If you would rather use a particular run with GPS, fine. Do the above, then analyze the run you want. Click on the File For Analysis box and pick the one you want to use. Click correct elevations. Then read the “average power” number from the data box at the bottom right and enter it into the calculated average power box.

The program only knows what you tell it. It does not automatically enter a new test power, because it does not know if you are testing or not. You need to tell it, just as you would need to tell WKO / CyclingPeaks what your threshold power is. Make sense?

I think I get it. I don’t mess with the test data fields if I am still using the same reference data and GVSS will use that to compare the data from the GPS file? Right?

So if I test again, say run another 10K, I pull up that GPS file, analyze it and enter the power data, distance and time and leave that in the test data blanks when I analyze subsequent training runs? The calculated average power from my 10K test is the number that I enter in the power blank and leave there until the next test?

If so…I got it. Thanks a bunch for your help. Do you discuss the use of GVSS in more detail in your book?

Mike

You got it. Once you enter the stuff in the data fields, be it the estimate or an actual GPS measured average, you leave it alone until you conduct another test. Piece of cake.

There will be a great deal on GOVSS in the new book…the current book does not have anything because I had not yet finished the new algorithm at the time of publication. However, you can read more here, and there is an important .PDF link at the bottom of the page, which has the more science-driven stuff and theory

Thanks a bunch for your help. Looks like a great tool. If you get a chance, go over to: http://www.endurancenation.us/forums/index.php and check out the power training forum. Coch Rich Strauss is starting to play with GVSS and is looking at incorporating it with his athletes.

Thanks again.
