1911

Which model goes in your arsenal if you’re choosing today?

Price range?

If I was looking at one of the “semi-custom” makers I’d go with Nighthawk.

If you’re one of us hoi polloi, Springfield makes a solid pistol.

S&W E-Series.

Springfield Armory fanboi here.

Wilson Combat or Les Baer.

Ed brown if I had a couple grand to blow. Springfield for the rest of us. The mil spec is solid and I usually gunsmith the parts I need to swap like the trigger, slide release, safety and if I’m feeling like it. The grip safety, seer and springs.

That will give you a solid combat 1911.

I grew up with the original colt modified to gold cup. Wondering why no love for colt today? I am seriously out of the loop. Price? Quality?
And am seriously thinking in the future of a 1911 as a back woods side arm. So would love to know.

Colt in general has never seriously pursued the civilian market. In fact, actions in the last suggested despite for the civilian market. So it just tends to get forgotten with all the choices out there. Browning designed the 1911 while working at colt. Other companies perfected it.

I would love a Delta Elite though.

Just a question. I thought this was going to be about the year 1911, am I the only one?

colt series 80, not that it’s a ‘best’ or whatnot, but for me anyway if i had one custom designed to fit my hand it could not be any better than this really pleased with it. i don’t carry any longer so it’s only in the car when i travel. i will say it was interesting the first few times putting it back together compared to the simplicity of a Sig, but after a couple of times no biggie.

If I had run across this 24 hours ago I would have thought the same. Was home sick yesterday camped out on the couch reading LR gun threads. Also was recently talking to my dad about Colt 1911’s since when he was active duty military this was his sidearm.

Easy. Full-house custom from Ned Christensen at Michiguns. He built me one from a 1953 Colt C-Block a few years ago … beautiful, accurate, runs like a top, and built to my specs. A working heirloom. If choosing now, I’d get him working on a something based on a new S-70 Colt frame/slide, maybe a CCO. Think he finally reopened his wait list (edit: nope I see it’s back closed). I’d also love to have a 1911 made by Chuck Rogers (govt model) or CT Brian (his ‘Chopper’, CCO) – the ones I’ve shot have been superb. Hilton Yam has done some work for me, too. Not sure he’s still in the 1911 full-house custom world anymore, however.

Meh, on semi-custom pieces – all pretty much the same but much nicer than stock. They’ve always required custom work to get the way I want them. For a bit more $ (and wait time) I prefer to start from the ground up and get it right the first time. If pressed, I’d go higher end Ed Brown maybe Wilson although I think they are overpriced. Done with Les Baer, but I’ll keep the one I own as it’s now heavily modified. Never shot a Nighthawk.

Beautiful. This is likely my next purchase as I have a few 9mm of different breeds (including S&W). I’ve always loved the styling, fit and function of this model.

Have owned many and if I needed another semi-auto, I’d buy another vintage S&W 639 (Model 39 in stainless steel). Has all the heft of the '11, shoots 9mm (which are cheap) and it’s just sexy. I don’t carry it concealed because of the weight, and for that I choose the S&W M&P Shield in .40S&W.

LOVE my E-series 1911 with skandium frame and stainless steel slide.

Yep, but I’m Canadian, so…

Shall we start with George V crowned King of England? Perhaps the end of Sir Wilfrid Laurier’s reign as PM? Marie Curie winning the Nobel Prize in Chemistry? Just spitballing here.

You guys are so narrow minded. This thread IS about an important event that happened in the year 1911. That’s the year this pistol, designed by the brilliant John Browning, entered service with the US Army.

If you had a 1911, you wouldn’t have to spitball…

Sheesh.

Every American Household should have a 1911 in it.

Just one???

Picked up a Kimber Ultra Covert II recently. Spectacular firearm.
