Top 5 Best Small SUVs For Cyclist/Triathlete

A couple of items you might want to keep in mind when shopping for a small SUV as there are a number of good choices.

  1. Make sure it will hold your bike in the back with the front wheel removed. Most will hold two bikes but frame size might make a difference. An SUV that holds a 50 cm frame might not hold a 58 cm frame. Roof racks are nice but having two bikes above your head will cost you 2-4 mpg on the highway.

  2. If you don’t really need AWD or 4WD, don’t get it. Most compact SUVs are based on front-wheel drive platforms (the Jeep Liberty is an exception and is RWD) and foregoing AWD or 4WD will typically save $1000 up front and add 2 mpg to fuel economy.

  3. Don’t be afraid to buy a used model. Most vehicles irregardless of who builds them are very dependable and buying a 1-2 year old model can save you several thousand dollars. Buying it from the dealer will often get you a 70,000 mile warranty as part of the price.

  4. Keep in mind what other uses you might have for your SUV. Most can’t tow more than 1000 lbs while the V6 Escape triplets, V6 Equinox twins and the V6 Liberty are exceptions and can tow at least 3500 lbs. A triathlon/fishing vacation in Lake Placid is a great way to spend a week or two.

I drive a V6 FWD 2002 Mazda Tribute with 90,000 trouble-free miles. Typical highway mpg is 24-26. A 58 cm Cannondale just fits upright in the back without lowering the seat.
