I got a set of Record cranks for Christmas (Square taper, not the new “improved” version) as a replacement for my FSA crankset. I installed them on my bike yesterday and I had a fantastic ride to the shop and back. I usually ride at quite a mellow pace. But yesterday I was hammering the whole way, out of the saddle on hills and I generally drilled the whole ride. It was way faster than my previous rides. For those of you looking for some extra speed, I guarantee these cranks will make you faster. They worked for me.
The FSAs are a waste of money in my opinion.
(No offense intended, h2ofun, I just needed a way to brag about my new toy.
On the Ti I use Teflon tape (plumbers tape) on the threads and I use a THICK automotive wheel bearing grease on the threads in addition to the tape. The Alu Cervelo - no creaks ever, Steel Bianchi - no creaks ever. I also make sure that there is a nice thin coat of grease on the inside of the cup (non-drive side). There is no reason at all to not use a heavy grease as this is not at all a rotating part.
Okay - I have Aluminum Record cranksets (175mm) on Carbon Shell Record BB’s. I have Carbon Record cranksets on Carbon Shell BB’s and I have the new 2007 Record Carbon Ultra Torque crankset…given a blind folded “Pepsi Challenge” I can honestly say that I can not tell one from the other. I sure wish my new crankset would make me faster…
I got warned but wanted to try out the whole outboard BB thing. The FSAs flex visibly, are expensive, and don’t stay on all that tight. I also much prefer the look of metal cranks. So I’ve come full circle and have settled back in with a square taper BB and AL cranks. (Which are quite light BTW.) My big gripe with Campy at the moment is that all of their new cranks (in Chorus and Record) are carbon and even for 06, if you wanted to go compact, you had to go carbon. I hope this external BB experiment ultimately fails. If the market really demands oversized BB spindles (and I’m not sure it does) then it should be done right with oversized BB shells.
As for the BB, I went with Chorus (My build is full Chorus with the exception of the crankset). I was considering Record and really wanted a Phil Wood, but the Chorus was expensive enough.
WHOAAAA NELLY!!! You did call Chorus but for the crank? Um…how come? You know what the diffrence is between a Record and Chorus crank? The coating on the EPS chain ring is it.
Dude…try the Record Carbon Utltra Torque cranks and you will need a waterproof seat cover!
Campy Rocks!
I did…didnt notice anything from my previous square taper Record…I have had 03,04,05,06,07 Record Cranks…cant tell one from the other in the seat.
It was a present from the wife. I asked for Chorus, but she had a hard time finding 06 Chorus, so she went with Record. I can’t say I fault that logic or am unhappy with the outcome.

Chip
So I spent $$$$$ on my Record cranks for some coating. Stupid questions what coating and what does it do.

I had FSA K-Force compact cranks with DA put on my new bike. As I was walking out the door with the bike I turned to the shop owner and said switch it out to the Campy Record. From your review I made a good choice. Have fun with your new present.
I don’t doubt that the new cranks are nice. But, seriously, unless the bearings were shot on your original FSA BB, I can’t imagine that you’d be able to detect any difference in cranks unless you were staring at them while you pedaled. Come on, ever hear of the “placebo effect”? How much difference could there be – 2-3 watts at the most maybe?
Oh, come on…Leave us alone. This is all Campagnolo, all the time here on this thread. You Shimano lovers are all the same. You get excited or worked up over our love of Campagnolo, and before you know it you drop a chain while shifting to the excited mode.
This thread is a bit of a joke. You’re right, I can’t feel any difference while riding, and I certainly don’t believe there is any difference in power. The FSAs were a maintenance pain in the butt and while I could see the crank arms deflect a bit under certain types of load, I’m not sensitive enough to feel it. Oh, one more thing, currently the FSAs are way more expensive than the 06 Record cranks and provide dubious advantages.
