Tonight I watched my bike get stolen

Just think how much shop lifting would drop if we had more around like you. I had a friend mugged near a store that was beside a Gold’s Gym. The mugger was stopped rather quickly!

I rolled my eyes when I read the post you replied too, not because of what he/she said but because I knew it would sprout a bunch of upset comments…

Sorry, but come on…

It never ceases to amaze me how many people would elect to kill someone over stolen possessions. Dude, they were bikes, GPS’ and maybe some shades. Even if they were running off with a box containing $50k in cash, do you really think that it would be worth killing them over? It’s just stuff - it isn’t like they were threatening your family…

Note that I am not advocating that the thieves get off scot free. Chase them down, reclaim your stolen possessions and use the appropriate means (an acceptable level of force) that you feel is required to safely hold them until the police arrive; if you feel that you have the capacity to do so.

It’s documented, clear as day. You just gotta pay attention…

I’m sorry, but I don’t follow your inference.

Clearly I’m not “upset”. Did you mean that the comment regarding “ridding the world of a couple of scumbags” (paraphrasing from memory) was obviously in jest? That particular comment may have been - I don’t know. But I do know that there are plenty of people out there who honestly believe that such action would be perfectly justified.

Well, the unfortunate irony of all this is that I was the one that posted about a year ago about how the apt I had just moved into didn’t allow bikes. They expected us to keep race bikes in the locked, common bike room with all the other commuter bikes. Yeah right. So I fought them on it and they bumped our name to the top of the wait list for a garage so it would be locked and we’d be the only ones with access to it.

And everyone wondered when I refused to store it down there for the first few weeks (leading to some disagreements with the bf). Guess I was right on this one. The QR is now safely part of our dining room art.

I went through this exact shit at an apartment I used to live at. I took the extra liberty of putting my own lock on the commuter cage after all the other bikes had been stolen from the cage except mine (pays to have an old cruddy beater for that purpose). So the mgr said I couldn’t do that and should get one of the storage units instead… Uh, nice idea, asshole; I already had a nicer mtn bike stolen out of one of those before, only they obviously didn’t care or weren’t paying attention. I’m getting pissed again just writing about it, and that happened probably close to 10 years ago. I ended up getting up in the mgr’s face and got invited to give my 30-days notice to move out, which I did.

And if I caught some dude trying to pull that shit in my house now, he’d better look bad enough to convince me straight away that I couldn’t take him, otherwise I’d grab the nearest crescent wrench off the workbench and go cave his fucking skull in. I’d consider that appropriate force in defense of my home; it’s definitely a step up from simply having a bike stolen from a rental unit or common space.

The amount of times a supposed petty home theft in which the perp is caught in the act that turns potentially deadly against the victim is pretty shocking. They are very lucky he wasn’t a drugged out armed criminal. There are stories exactly like this every day, except many end with the woman getting raped, the man getting stabbed or shot, not the perp running. A criminal in my garage stealing property is a direct threat to me and my family and i would unhesitatently deal with it.
I conceal carry legally, have more weapons training and gunfight experience than any police officer in the local department and certaintly am not bothered when scum lose their ability to breathe.

I am glad all he wanted was bikes to support his habit. Hopefully he rots in a cell for a while.

Yeah, and they are just people, dirtbag people. We can make more of them.

shrug

Yes you follow me, I assumed that the post was made in a light hearted manner, most likely just venting.

While you post with thought, not all do… Maybe it’s not worth responding to those who don’t, otherwise you’d be in for a big job.

WEll, for home protection, we’ve now got a deadbolt lock on the door and an additional lock on the garage!
Hopefully no more near-bike thefts.

Moral of the story: You can NEVER be too careful with your bike!

renters. insurance. i’d be ticked to lose it, but kind of excited to get a new one…

Not to turn this into a handgun debate or anything…

Actually, Obama only wants to limit behind the counter sales and behind the curtain sales at gun shows and hold the gun companies accountable for targeting criminals in their design and production of firearms (ie…finger print resistant stocks). Nice try though, I’ve heard it a million times…

You’ve also heard he’s not raising taxes. He’s just cutting deductions. The net effect is the same.

Not to mention you would go to jail for murder - in most states (I know Texas is one exception) you have to prove that your own life was in imminent danger in order to use deadly force in self-defense. Not to mention that if you own a gun you are twice as likely to kill yourself with it as you are a perp.

That’s a good thing bro…Who needs an ASSAULT weapon…I mean come on. Maybe they can make it so that only gun clubs can own them and then if you want to go shoot one you can…but the whole point of gun control is to keep guns away from criminals…not take away guns from the average honest citizen. I own 4 guns, my dad probably 20…but we aren’t criminals and would not sell them to a criminal…but some people will (ie…gun shows)…that’s the whole point. It is our own fault that the gun ban is coming down…if gun stores and shows wouldn’t sell to criminals and people wouldn’t sell guns out of their trunks…then it wouldn’t be a problem.

If we all owned 4 guns (or 20 like your dad), and knew how to use them. I highly doubt this original post would have been posted. If criminals knew we were all armed, they may think twice about steeling a bike.

Drugs are illegal, banned etc, yet they keep showing up, not sure how banning guns would take them out of a criminals hands.

Anyway this is a debate that will never end and we can just be thankful the OP was not hurt.

Time for a tazer. My sister lives in Michigan and carries one - the thing looks scary. Next time your boyfriend is among thieves, it’s time to drop one of them and leave them for the cops…

BTW, if they are breaking into homes, can’t the cops try to lift prints and run them against their CODIS file? I’m sure there were prints on your shiny bike… Next time…

Thanks for the suggestion, but I’ll have to pass. I prefer the non-violent/no harm approach. They were young idiots who made a mistake. Here’s hoping they got the shit scared out of them by being caught and don’t do it to anyone again.
