Daschle just discovered last summer that the use of a car and driver is considered reportable income over the past three years. So he did the right thing and paid up $ 101,943.00 all is good now no problem. He’s a honest man when you make him tell the truth.
With Daschle and Geithner back taxes collected and going into the pot that will stimulate the economy.
I think I’ll stop paying my taxes. In a few years when the IRS guys come-a-knockin, I’ll say it was an oversight & write them a check. If they never come - all the better!
What alternate reality do these guys live in that they think anyone buys these excuses? Like Sen Daischle doesn’t have access to an accountant for his taxes? Seriously? What, does he really expect us to believe he’s at home doing his taxes on Turbo Tax?
Oh come one, how many people actually know they are supposed to report ALL their income and if they are self employeed they have to pay the employers tax. I mean it’s common mistake, so common in fact that you can run the IRS and not know it’s a mistake. Seriously who among us has not made such mistakes and if we were all not allowed to make such mistakes none of us would have jobs.
Oh wait, if half of us made those mistakes we’d probably not have jobs…unless you consider picking up trash in an orange jumpsuit a job.
Obama has set very high standards for himself. He has also recently called the corporate world “shameless” (his word) in how it awards it’s executives large bonuses.
I don’t see the moral authority in Obama if he’s going to make choices like Daschle, especially given Obama’s promise of government we can believe in.
Obama needs to take responsibility for mistakes like this, and not wait for the public to finally get sick of his compromises of integrity.
What I am tired of is guys like Daschle who serve in govt, then get out - MAKE MILLIONS, then get re-appointed. Once he is done, then he will make MILLIONS again. Bascially using govt office as a platform to enrich himself - it is absolutely disgusting.
We need to make more positions in the Federal govt - citizen positions. IOW, you have a job to pay your bills and go up to DC for one week per quarter to do the people business. The problem is these guys spend way too much time in DC - it corupts them. Obama’s picks are just re-cycling them - nothing has changed.
I heard a story about President Truman. He paid for his own travel and for his own meals when he was President. And he refused lucrative offers once he left office, feeling that people didn’t want him, they wanted the office of the President, and he felt strongly that the office shouldn’t be for sale. Compare that attitude with the Clintons and the millions they have made.
“Compare that attitude with the Clintons and the millions they have made.”
You started off making a good point, and then had to ruin it with this. Certainly you don’t think the Clintons are the first or only former First Family to make big money on speaking engagements and writing based on the office of the Presidency.
The Clintons weren’t the first and certainly won’t be the last. Reagan made lots of money on speaking engagements, as have Carter and Bush Sr. and eventually Bush Jr. So no, I didn’t mean to single out only the Clintons, it’s just that with the news about the hundreds of millions that they have received, it was fresh in my mind.
Then you won’t be happy the Daschle’s wife is one of the more powerful lobbyists in washington…
I grew up in SD and went to the same University as Daschle. I still remember his first run for the Senate when I was in HS. It was one of the dirtiest campaigns in history, against an honest man who was completely blind sided by Mr. Daschle and his friends. This man is slime, and yes his wife has made a fortune lobbying. He will use anyone, and cut any corner he can to get ahead.
the guy is a douchebag. And now apparently a felon who will never be prosecuted… great! Obama is really hitting it out of the park with the idiots he is surrounding himself with.
Certainly you don’t think the Clintons are the first or only former First Family to make big money on speaking engagements and writing based on the office of the Presidency.
Good response, though it is important to signify the key difference with the Clinton’s. She was a sitting US Senator. Sometimes when these “firsts” come to the forefront we do not challenge the context. In this case, I thought they have significantly contributed to making more poor behavior (taxes, accepting money, books) acceptable. You are correct in that they are not the first to make money, but they are the first husband-wife team of power and it is important that is evaluated and considered when putting in place rules and making selections versus elections. Less important to me on the discussion around is it right or wrong and more about ensuring our system evolves to where these questions are asked.
As do all ancillary staff. The last time I was assigned to a presidential detail, the SS agents I travelled with were all complaining about the cost of the food on Air Force 1. Something like $10 for a salad.
