Excerpts:
**While Knoll forever will be linked to triathlon’s first 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike and marathon, his true passion is running. (In fact, he never entered another Ironman.) **
**Tom Knoll will walk outside the Marine Corps Recruit Depot tomorrow morning, head east and start jogging. **
**If all goes according to script, he’ll make like Forrest Gump and not stop running until the Fourth of July, when he reaches the Iwo Jima Memorial across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C. **
**That’s 3,300 miles across 112 days of running. Or 29½ miles a day. **
******An impressive feat, particularly considering Knoll’s age. **
**He’s 75. **
**A retired Marine and one of 15 men to complete the original Ironman Hawaii triathlon in 1978, Knoll is embarking on the journey to raise money for charities and heighten fitness awareness. **
**“I take my hat off to the guy,” said Dave Orlowski, one of the 1978 Ironman Hawaii’s Gang of 15. “Most people 75 are looking for Happy Hour, dinner and an early night to bed.” **
**The cross-country sojourn will be a repeat trip for Knoll. **
**Twenty-five years ago he jogged from the nation’s capital to Burbank in 64 days. **
