Being that you’re ex-military and all…
My brother in law just dropped of a Colt Government Series 80 in .380 auto (based on the 1911) for me to keep for a while. It’s filthy! Can’t stand filthy pieces. Anyway, while I am familiar with most/my own arms, I’m not with this one. How do I break it down? I’m mechanically inclined, but I don’t want to dive into something where the springs fly all over b/c I don’t know “Some little trick.”
BTW, what was your MOS? I’ve got a few buddies back home who all went Army at one time or another - one former Ranger, one current 82nd Airborne (Demolitions), and one Green Beret; with the last two doing tours in either Afghanistan and/or Iraq.
Thanks!!
Kupe
I think that’ll work. Thanks!!
Tom’s MOS?
One of my favorite topics as a former long range surveillance team member, another of the nation’s smallest (less than 800 members) and most elite military units.

2 years as Scout Observer, F Company,425th Infantry (Ranger /Airborne), Long Range Surveillance Unit, Michigan National Guard. Prior to that, Ft.Benning and other things. Mostly typing.
Easy to find, search posts threw up 16 posts from Tom under infantry. Is Military Intellegence still considered an oxymoron?
Unabashed hijack follows:
Which would you choose for target and other competitions, H&K Mark 23, Sig P220, or Colt Gold Cup, all in .45?
For pure paper punching , If you can shoot
Model 52 S&W . 38 spec. mid range ,not made anymore
a 1911 in .38 super , Maybe Comped & ported
a Wilson combat .45 ,
210 Sig 9mm was the best in europe , for 100 meter matches but High priced .
Most .22 Ruger pistols , Sig trail side .22 , Marvel .22 conversions to slide on a 1911 frame. These will out shoot most of the above with cheaper ammo.
Most .22 Ruger pistols
My first adult purchase was a Ruger Gov’t Comp. It is still my favorite for paper punching. (As for shooting ability, I come nowhere near outshooting it.) No kidding about the ammo cost. I can shoot the .22 until my arms can’t hold it up anymore for less than the cost of a box of good 9mm or .45.
Looking for a bigger bang. One of my brothers has the Mark 23. Tons of fun. Looking for different to expand our collective choices. I also regularly shoot the Berreta 92F and just don’t get that excited by it. That’s why I am looking at the .45’s.
Another thing about the 1911 style is that I can develop a whole new black hole to sink money into with all of the different types of customization. (NO! Bad, very bad. Must resist.)

The 1911 has more after market parts than any pistol , My .45 is cheap to shoot with the lead bullet reloads I make 5 -9 cents a round with used brass , which is still cheaper than match .22 ammo .
I see a few patrol officers with a cocked & locked .45 strapped on , most everyone else has the plastic Glock ( not that they are more accurate ) because they are light to wear all day.
Send me a message / email address , I will send a few of my .45 links - picks - Ideas off the twitch .

COMPLETELY forgot about reloading! Tons of expenditure potential there. What is your thinking on it? Do lots a couple of times or do just enough for each session or two?

In So. Cal? I am in OC and did not know any agencies allowed that anymore.

The weight is the best argument against concealed carry in my mind. Just too damn annoying unless you under a duty.

You almost have to commit to a large volume to get the savings , progressive press , 5 lbs of powder , 2000 bullets ,a 5 gallon can of brass.

A guy flew in last year , San bernardino ? Hell last year the San diego PD was allowed to use 1911s , but since you had to qualify with it / buy your own ammo , that ended quickly . No money , I think they are all barney fifing it , with one bullet a piece ,since the money crunch.

I rented a few at an indoor range , .40 cal. points like a brick . lots of muzzel blast ,high pressure rd.

Hey,
My MOS was (of course…) 11 Bravo (P) crosstrained in, was it, 13 Charlie? (Radio telephone operator).
I don;t remember how to break down a 1911. I think I have done it two times in the last 23 years. I don’t even own a 1911. I liked the Para-Ordinance 1911’s the most as they were pretty darn good stock.
I have a custom Glock 19 with a trigger job (yes, it *is *possible on a Glock trigger, it takes you to about a 3lb pull down from well over 4 lb’s), trijicons, extended slide and mag release and other goodies. I can;t remember the name of the company that suped it up, which is a shame, because they did a super job.
It is a 9mm. I favor the .45 round for hitting power on the first one or two rounds with ball ammunition. In the 9mm you have to use some kind of fancy ammo like a Hydro-Shock or Glaser Safety Slug (frangible to prevent over-penetration and, since it disintigrates on impact no one can pull ballistics info from the round so they are difficult to trace to their origin). The Glasers and most hollow points won’t work well through safety glass though. The cool thing to do was to vary your magazine loads with 1 round AP, 1 hollow point, 1 AP, 1 hollow point (2 consecutive double taps, an “El Presidente”!) and then safety slugs for some of the remaining rounds.
The issue with the 9mm isn’t so much the caliber as it is the round. If you can use an expanding round and you aim center mass or slightly lower it has great stopping power.
Again, I like the .45 round, have never been a fan of the .40 and carried the 9mm because it is the NATO round used by most Euro police units.
