Tom Coburn's Tax Decoder

Anyone start reading this yet? It is sad that Coburn is in his final term, he is one of a few honest men in politics.

I am into it…thanks for sharing.

Reading all this is sickening.

We could balance our budget next year without a whole lot of pain. Tom Coburn for President. What I like is in his recommendations he takes on EVERYBODY there are no sacred cows.

Imagine governments run by non-career politicians.

I was never for term limits but Jonathan Gruber has convinced me, otherwise. As soon as Tom Coburn even thinks about running for POTUS, the leftist media would begin to destroy him.

“Examples of just a few of the tax preferences highlighted in Tax Decoder include:
Billions of dollars in tax breaks go to wealthy pro sports team owners, who can count the roster of players as a depreciable asset.
The Tuna Tax Break provides nearly $10 million to certain domestic corporations operating in American Samoa.
Tax credits for historic and nonhistoric structures result in lost revenue of $1 billion annually, subsidize beach front resorts, Major League Baseball stadiums, and luxury hotels.
Ani DiFranco, a Grammy award winning artist, took advantage of $1.5 million in historic preservation tax credits and $3.7 million in New Market Tax Credits to build her Righteous Babe record label headquarters.
Many charities give little to their cause, despite paying no taxes. For example, Lady Gaga’s 501(c)(3), the Born This Way Foundation, raised $2.6 million in 2012, but only gave away $5,000 for “grants to organizations or individuals.”
For FY 2014, the tax gap will likely be about $500 billion. If this amount were fully paid, virtually the entire deficit currently projected for FY 2014, $483 billion, could be eliminated.”

Seems to me the complaints here are that people aren’t paying enough taxes

Fuck this guy.

As soon as Tom Coburn even thinks about running for POTUS, the leftist media would begin to destroy him.

“leftist media”
I guess that explains where you stand.

What attacks do you think they could use to destroy him?

Coburn has an outstanding record and is incredibly honest any time I have heard him speak on a issue. There just isn’t much to go after other than Coburn doesn’t believe in sacred cows. He is just as quick to attack people scamming SS disability as he is to attack millionaires not paying any income taxes.

I think Coburn’s bigger problem would be the right wing media, because he would do a lot more damage to typical Republican donors if he ever became President than he could ever do to the left wingers.

Fuck this guy.

I’m not really sure what to say other than you probably have an IQ similar to Grover Nordquist.

Taking away tax expenditures is not raising taxes, it it taking away a government handout that is being funneled through the tax system.
You clearly didn’t get the primary point of the paper, which was to say the tax code is being misused to the point that you really can’t
even tell what anyone is actually paying in “taxes” because there is so much smoke and mirrors involved in the tax code and how it is being used.

I don’t know what his IQ is so I can’t speak to that.

Taking away tax expenditures is not raising taxes…

That’s nice. Did someone say it is?

it it taking away a government handout that is being funneled through the tax system.

I fail to see how taking less of someone’s money is a “handout”.

Mugger - “Stick 'em up!”

Victim - “Take my money. Don’t shoot me.”

Mugger - “You have $200 here. I’ll just take $100.”

Victim - “Thanks. Thanks for giving me $100.”

the tax code is being misused to the point that you really can’t
even tell what anyone is actually paying in “taxes” because there is so much smoke and mirrors involved in the tax code and how it is being used.

I agree with this statement wholeheartedly but I didn’t really see anyone suggesting that we all get the same deductions (handouts as you call them). I saw mostly complaints about people not paying enough.

So, fuck this guy.

Pay attention.

Deductions equal welfare.

Got it?

All money belongs to the government. Whatever we have after working all day is what they give us.

If we got rid of the EITC and Child Tax credit we could lower EVERYONE tax rates 5-10%. If we got rid of mortgage deductions, education tax credits, etc, we could lower EVERYONE tax rates even more.

Our tax code is an abomination. Lets stop “trying” to use the tax code to encourage behavior from poor folk, middle class or millionaires.

I am as conservative as anyone but I recognize the giveaways are across the board. I want to put Washington DC into a depression. I am in DC today and its nothing but building after building for of bureaucrats whose job depends on a huge complicated federal govt.

Yes, I suppose we could lower everyone’s taxes if we got rid of those things. But I’m only seeing the desire to do the first part (eliminating deductions) and not the second part (lowering rates).

We could also lower the taxes of everyone who pays them by making the other half of the country pay some as well.

We could also drastically lower taxes by radically shrinking the federal government.

I don’t see anything in Coburns “report” that’s advocating that.

So, fuck this guy.

Your not reading it close enough. In his recommendations he states very specifically we can drop the tax rates. He also states everyone should participate

I’m kind of enjoying this. If your attitude is really “Fuck Tom Coburn” then you deserve to get shafted because he is one of the few people in Washington that actually gets it and wants to fix the problem of big government. If you are somehow construing this report as Coburn wants to raise taxes then you really have the reading comprehension of a 4 year old.
You are just proving your are one of the legion of idiots that will cut off your nose to spite your own face and think “Fuck this guy” is somehow clever.

He clearly states right up front his intention is to lower overall rates. The point of the report is to identify all the abuses that need to be removed in order to lower overall rates.
Lowering the overall rates is the easy part, nobody would be against it. Individuals being asked to give up their personal handouts so everyone can get lower rates, that is the actual problem of
“clubbing baby seals” - to quote a Democratic staffer (from Coburn’s report).

Has he written anything about the runaway spending by politicians? Or is that now a fact of life requiring that we milk every ounce of tax revenue from our citizens?

Coburn has talked a lot about spending in the past. In this report he does mention all the duplicate and ineffective spending problems. One of his tenants is that if Americans could keep more of their income they could pay for more of their needs. The other tenant is the tax code is one of the ways Washington keeps its power. You should dig into the report.

I think the fact that tri_yoda and I agree on this is an opportunity for a new political force.

It is sad that Coburn is in his final term, he is one of a few honest men in politics.

Weird, I was listen to a show yesterday that short of said he was the anti-christ
