Today's WTF - Grumpy Cat

Apparently the cat known as Grumpy Cat online has generated nearly $100 million for her owner in the past two years.

What the fuck?

More proof that I’m an idiot.

I’m sure you’ve seen Grumpy Cat. Tons of products, calendars, coffee mugs. There’s even a movie.

Of course I’ve seen Grumpy Cat. It’s still mind boggling that the cat could generate that kind of income for it’s owner, for basically nothing.

not surprising really. He’s huge. My wife loves him, I bought her a calendar and a book last year.

99% of the Internet is based on nothing.

pick a pop icon, any pop icon, and you can say the same thing.

BTW, it isn’t nothing that they do. Grumpy Cat isn’t just a lady posting pictures of her cat online anymore. He’s a brand. Also, I’m assuming that the $100m figure is revenues, not profits…

Sorry, but I don’t think that’s true. The cat didn’t do anything. The owner didn’t do anything except post a picture of her cat. The cat was turned into a meme by other internet people, not the owner.

Most pop icons have done something. They produce music albums, or they produce movies or TV shows, or they provide sports entertainment, etc. There are an increasing number of do-nothing celebs, like the Kardashians, but this cat literally did NOTHING.

Where does a movie idea for this come from? There’s no story here, so it’s just a random movie plot with (insert character here). They chose to insert the Grumpy Cat.

I’m not saying the owner shouldn’t have taken advantage of the demand, but it just boggles my mind that anyone wants to pay for stuff with this cat on it.

Well, she posted a picture of her cat.

someone liked it

she posted more pictures,

more people liked them

she started a website dedicated to the cat

lots of people liked that

she made some videos of the cat

etc…

by pop icon, not referring to just people. eg, Hello Kitty is just a drawing of a cat, not even a real cat. The drawing of the Hello Kitty does even less than Grumpy Cat. But I would bet dollars to donuts that Hello Kitty has done way more than $100m in revenues…

Just imagine if there was a “Grumpy Moose”. BLeP would be a Canadian gazillionaire and we would be buying his schlock.

First, Hello Kitty is Japanese, and those guys are crazy. Second, Hello Kitty was a decoration made up and added to existing products. The company was already making stuff, and they just thought putting a cat on them would make them sell. That’s a little different.

I’ll meet your Grumpy cat and raise you one Maru (far superior in all respects).

Why is this so surprising?

In the 70’s, some dude put a rock in a box and called it the “Pet Rock”. He sold more than a million of these things. Again, it was just a rock.

Plus, just in case you haven’t heard, Grumpy Cat is a democrat.

pretty sure Hallmark (or whomever is the licensee for Grumpy Cat cards) was already making greeting cards. They just thought putting a cat on them would make them sell.

But yeah, I have no idea why things catch on in Japan like they do. But I’m glad they do, Japanese game shows are awesome!!

Agreed. Maru wins the internet.

Grumpy cat is basically a Kardashian with fur. Only smarter. I’ll never understand America’s obsession with celebutards.

That damn cat came to Vancouver as part of the book tour, and our friend in the publishing business, had to send a limo to the airport to fetch the stupid animal. More likely, the humans/handlers’ egos got too big for their own good.

Google “Tard the Cat”. You will find that Grumpy Cat is really Tard.

Obviously using the term “tard” is a no go in this day and age so
the owner changed the cat’s name and begin raking it in.

Must be why the TardBlog had to go away? At least someone made a mirror site. http://fullduplex.org/tardblog/

People identify with the grumpy and aspire to the cuddly. Grumpy Cat is so them.
