Today's happy car story

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1317386/Texan-year-old-boy-runs-kills-newborn-brother-freak-accident.html

A four-year-old boy managed to start his family’s mini van and run over his mother and newborn brother, killing the tiny infant.
*The freak accident happened when the child was playing in the vehicle and started the engine. *

Cars are one of the most deadly devices that we use, twice that of guns. It’s amazing to me that there aren’t more regulations required for car ownership. I wonder where the manufacturers stand with regard to more regulations on ownership. They should implement laws requiring an additional code or fingerprint scanner after turning the key in order to start the car to prevent situations like this.

If I’m not mistaken all cars have VIN numbers which are registered with the state according to the owner etc. All of this information is searchable and is connected to such things as insurance. On top of that if you want to actually drive your car on public property you have to have an additional license as well as mandated auto insurance…all of which is traceable directly to the VIN.

I suspect that such a system would be completely unacceptable to gun owners.

Those regulations it did nothing to prevent this tragedy.

Bad guys still drive cars unregistered, and scrape off VIN numbers every single day.

What more should we be doing to stop this lawlessness?

Ban cars! I’m all for it. Let’s ban guns, too, though. Tit for tat, since we’re making this comparison.

This would also solve the obesity epidemic too! Have you considered running for office?

I would, but the fucking gun lobby in Colorado doesn’t like my position (see above). Damn the NRA!

Those regulations it did nothing to prevent this tragedy.

Do you want me to go thru the list of regulations on Automobiles that exists to prevent such tragedies that are mandated by the government? If I do would you be willing to have the same amount of regulations applied to guns? Take for instance the fact that most new cars must have the brake depressed in order to be able to put the vehicle in gear. Government mandated regulation in order to prevent “Little Johnny” from getting in the car and putting it in gear and driving over someone .Yes this has indeed prevented a multitude of tragedies.

What does “Bad guys driving cars” have to do with “Four year old accidentally drove over family”. You’re comparing apples to oranges. Things like trigger locks, gun lockers, keeping ammo and gun seperate would all save lives in the same manner any number of regulations on car safety have over the years.

What more should we be doing to stop this lawlessness?

When does a four year old that starts a car and drives over someone get classified as “Lawlessness”. I would consider it an accident. Quite frankly an accident I would be interested in finding out how exactly it happened. Without reading the article my guess is that it must be an older vehicle, one that does not have the safety regulation of having to have your foot on the brake in order to start the vehicle, or a really agile four year old with some serious reach.

Furthermore things like Lojack, GPS etc do in fact stop some of this lawlessness as very often those “Lawless” individuals have stolen the vehicle. Having similar devices on guns would allow for tracking of said gun if stolen.

FWIW it’s worth I don’t agree with any of these regulations and don’t believe anyone should be FORCED into complying with them. I do however believe that a responsible gun owner WOULD have these devices and take these actions just as a responible car owner would pay for the safety features and protections to their family and selves if not mandated to do so.

You are right. A responsible gun owner would. There are a lot of irresponsible people out there and more regulations will not influence them.

You’ve never bought a gun in California, have you?

My son used to like playing the car. I always made sure a window was down and there were no keys in it. With most cars being automatics these days it makes it super easy to start 'em and go. Even a 4 year old can do it…

You are right. A responsible gun owner would. There are a lot of irresponsible people out there and more regulations will not influence them.

IF the government makes it mandatory that all guns are sold with tracking devices and various safeties then everyone is influenced. This is no different for cars or any other product. You’re trying to make the comparison that we should “Ban cars” because they are dangerous but will not accept the fact that cars are ridiculously regulated for safety, specifications etc etc etc. If you want to make a comparison between the two then you have to accept the reality as well.

Personally I disagree with the regulations on either, that is my philosophical opinion, but your comparison simply does not stand.

Yes, and no. If you want to count homicides, cars are 4x more dangerous than firearms. If you want to count suicides, cars are 2x more dangerous than firearms. If you want to count accidents, cars are 430x more dangerous than firearms. Add them all up, cars are only 1.333x more dangerous than firearms (to Americans).

Now, alcohol is 2x more dangerous than cars. Being fat is 3x more dangerous than cars. Tobacco is 10x more dangerous than cars…

Ban it all - no firearms, no cars, no alcohol, no tobacco, fat people go to fat prison camp till they work it off.

Wait a minute. A legally purchase gun is done through an FFL. All of the buyer’s information is recorded and tied to the serial number. Ballistics can match a bullet to a gun. The paperwork matches the gun to the owner.

An illegally purchased gun has no such tracking. An illegally purchased (or stolen) car has none of that tracking information either.

Now, someone may mention that a private gun sale does not involve transferring paperwork. Fair enough. But, the same could be said about a car.

You talk about all the safety specifications for a car. So what? All that does is ensure the car does not blow up when you turn it on. Guns have the same type of safety requirement to ensure the gun does not explode when fired.

Please list guns with no serial number and or no safety.

Yet we still have hit and run accidents, and cars stolen without a trace or to be used in crimes, and people driving without licenses or insurance. I’m not sure how effective that system is in stopping those who choose to break the law.

I suspect that banning cars would be a far more effective way to stop drive-by shootings than banning guns.

Yes . . . . more material for my campaign platform!

Please list guns with no serial number and or no safety.

Pretty sure my grandma’s firearms have neither.

Pretty sure they all predate the great depression though.

Well, they have.

It is now the law that all cars have Park Shift brake interlocks. You can not shift the car out of P without your foot on the brake. Which I am sure would have prevented this accident.

Congratulations on an Epic fail to end the year.

So how did this 4 year old:

  1. remove E-brake (most minivans its foot operated)
  2. shift out of park (which you need to depress the brake pedal)
  3. accelerate fast enough that the mom could not move out of the way
