Today was the first ride to work of the season

Almost.

D’oh, I had all my gear ready last night, but when I got up this morning, the temperature read 35 F and I just couldn’t do it.

When oh when is spring coming…

I planned on riding Wednesday but ma nature decided that we needed snow here on Tuesday. The roads were clear but it was only 32 Wed. morning. Shooting for Friday now! Rode in once about 3 weeks ago, took an hour for my toes to warm back up, just grabbed my toe covers and not my neoprene boots. The ride home was excellent though!

how do you keep from getting all stinky? I’ve been thinking about riding to work, especially since gas prices are so high right now, but even at this time of the year I’d work up a sweat during my ride. Office doesn’t have a shower, so what to do? Anything out there one could clean up with?

I’m lucky enough to have a shower available. Last year bicycling had and article about commuting and they recommended using baby wipes to clean up at the office. If you wear suits or clothes that might get wrinkled you might want to drive in one day and drop off a few days worth. I wear work pants and a polo shirts or t-shirts so I just roll them up in a towel and they are fine when I get to work. Shimano’s web site has a link to “Bike to Work” information as May 17-21 is “Bike to Work Week”.

The trick that I’ve found to work is to rule out weather as a preventor, i.e., dress warm and go. The only excuse I’ll allow myself is mechanical issues, or taper/recovery for an A priority race. If you get this mindset, riding in the cold is a non-issue.

As for getting stuff in to work, I’ll drive in over the weekend and drop off a week’s worth of clothes and food. That way, I don’t even have to carry anything in except my wallet, cell phone and access card.

The gym I belong to is across the street from my office building, so showering isn’t an issue for me. I’ve talked with people who use wipes (Old Spice now makes ones), and they think it’s fine, but not quite as a good as a shower. Good luck…

Sell your car! That way you don’t have a choice to ride or not. I ride every day to work. As long as you shower before the comute the stink is not that bad. Just take a dish towel with you to wipe off with and your set. Get a deoderant stone and chuck that nasty stick in the trash.

Road all winter this year.

You guys thought that we stopped training up here in the winter?

SAME HERE…but today I woke up and was sick. How far is work? For me, it will be 22 miles each way. All freaking hills going in. I am estimating 1:30 minutes. But In only think I’ll do this 2x/week.

For commuting to work I have it easy. I have a shower in the gym two floors above me and a dry cleaner across the street from me to keep my work clothes clean and a nice closet in my office to hang them so they don’t get wrinkled.

The only things I need to worry about transporting are my lunch, my sweaty, smelly bike gear and running clothes and my undies. This stuff I transport one of two ways. Either I use a backpack to bring these things and a couple of clean towels once a week or I use my bike with the rack on it and toss all the stuff into a bag that fits on the rack.

Now all I need to do is to find a pool that is close enough to swim at lunch time and I will be all set.

Grab all of the free Degree Deodorant samples you can at races - I’m set for life with race samples. Wipe off the worst of the sweat with a towel, change in the restroom, liberally apply deodorant and you’re ready for your first meeting.

My problem is my switch from calorie-dense foods to nutrient-dense ones is breaking my back. I weighed my lunch bag at 6 pounds the other day. Ouch.

Get a box of baby wipes, you can wash up pretty well with a few sheets. Works for a couple of guys I know who don’t have a shower available at their work.

get some large ziplocks, presoak a handtowel in water, wring out and apply soap. dump it in the ziplock and seal. take another towel with you. use the ziplock one to get the smell off and the other to dry and your clean.
I wish my job allowed me to commute.
