Natalie Morales and Hoda Kotb are training for the War at the Shore on September 20, 2009.”

The race is one of a series put on by our local triathlon club, the Sandy Hoookers.

(not sure where they got the “triathlon turns 25 this month”; they may be referring to this race’s first occurrence?)

I’m just hoping that people don’t pack around them. Passing is already miserable on the second lap for us long coursers. Of course, I’m making the assumption that they won’t be out front.

I think you can expect some video coverage (moto or car, possibly the latter?) and possibly a bike “escort”. Could be a little knot at that point. I don’t know the course, but hopefully there will be enough room. I would think that other racers wouldn’t know or care enough to clump around them.

When Oprah starts doing tri’s I’m going to curling.

Video crew for TV show means that anyone near them gets on the today show. That’s reason enough for people to clump.

The course is a loop (two loops for the longer version), with about a half mile lead in. The worst part of the course is the very start of the loop - the top few people from the first heat (long course) invariably hit it the second time right in the middle of one of the huge short course waves. It’s one car lane and a 1 ft shoulder across, cones on the left, generally barely moving cars to the left of the cones. It also seems slightly downhill - I’m usually at ~24-26 mph, and the average speed of the 3 abreast back is comfortably under 18.

I could’ve sworn you were local, surprised you’ve never done the course.

My first triathlon was the Monmouth County Sprint back in 85 or 86, but once Sea Bright refused to let the race through, that race died. They tried running it south through Long Branch/Deal, but they screwed it up so badly I never went back. I’ve never done one of Doug’s races, sorry to say. I only do 4-6 races per year, so I pick them carefully.

The original War at the Shore was fully on the Hook, and was a duathlon. I won it as the cyclist on a relay the one time I did it.

Ken,
So are you going to be there in your neon speedo and compression socks? You were always a sucker for attention.

Book marked for future pics of Natalie Morales in a designer tri-suit.

Based on her marathon time, I’m guessing she won’t be at the back.

There was a video of the two of them training for the race at Kathy Lee’s house, but it apparently has disappeared. It was so insipid I couldn’t watch past them getting on their bikes. No hot swimsuit shots, I think.

(I don’t even know who these people are, never watching that show)

As I’ve been home post-surgery I’ve had the TV on in the mornings and saw this clip/interview the other day. The Hoda lady said she was supposed to do an ocean swim put freaked out and didn’t get in, so we’ll see if she makes the start.

Ken–If they actually do the race, run just off their shoulder giving the secret ST handshake sign to the camera!

clm

I had no idea who these people were either. Hopefully Ms. Morales’ body is as lovely as her portrait.

We have a secret ST handshake? I’ll have to fnish reading that thread. I thought we left it at a Cervelo, with Zipps and an power meter.

I’m looking forward to good material from this coverage for Joe McHale on The Soup to rip on!

I am doing it, think I will duck tape “ST” on my disc cover for national coverage. Hopefully I wont see the cameras or at least when I am falling again that is. Whats that handshake again ? Ken I’ll buy ya a smoothie after the race at the place next to Gold’s gym. If you wait for me at the finish line after your done. You could be there while though. LOL

“Triathlon turns 25 this month”

Perhaps its a typo and they meant 35. Current issue of Triathlete Magazine says the first triathlon was September 1974 in San Diego.

I hated that.
