ToC "amateur" TT data

Anybody want to guess what the average power was for a clocking of 33:45 on the Solvang course by the fastest of the “amateurs” that ran the course before the pros?

I’ve got the file

  1. what?

I’m going higher. 363w

308
.

BTW, his time slotted him in just in front of Boonen

C’mon…no more guesses?

I’ll guess… let’s say… Hmmm… 315 watts???

Its just a guess Tom, but I would say 392W.

Ding, ding, ding, ding! We have a winner!

I have a feeling that’s going to be hard for some to believe…

For bonus points, what was his average power and time to the top of the hill on Ballard Canyon (where they took the “time check” in the coverage)?

edit: Oh yeah…you didn’t look over at the wattagetraining.com forum, did you??

Okay- it’s advertised at 15 miles in length- so 33:45 is about 26.7 mph for a slightly rolling course and some headwind- according to LA and profiles… I say someone who is quite aero at about 4.6-4.8 W/Kg could do it… at 150 lbs- that’s about 313-327 PT watts…

edit- fwiw- i started typing and hit post- before seeing the above reply!!!

Just curious why do you think 315 is hard to believe? Too low for that fast, too high for an amatueur, something else?

probably b/c there were lots of doubters on the 200 watts for 20km distance in 31 minutes thread…

The blog post about the winning rider:
Gary D’Velo is going to win the 30+ National TT Championships this year. He decided to warm up with the Tour of California TT. He rocked a 33:47 time, which would have slotted him in at 72nd place in the Pros, just ahead of Tom Boonen.

I would be surpised if a guy could win 30+ masters nats on 4.7 w/Kg… regardless if he’s super aero… Masters nats is usually 80% longer distance wise- which he would most likely have a slightly lower w/Kg, nonetheless the guy is strong and aero and could probably be a top 10 finisher.

Only 171 watts from third place in the pro race.

I agree-I was at 08 Masters Nats and the guy who set the fastest time of the day there (forgot his name) easily was in the high 5 w/kg range is my guess. I would guess his stand alone time (assuming he didnt race 114, 130 miles the days before) could have been quite high in the pro ranks. Though the 30+ may have produced one of the fastest times the older AG (40+ and 45+) had an even more densely packed fast old guys.

Four things…
First, I believe Marco was doing a bit of “friendly encouragement” with that blog post

Second, I’ve seen Gary’s files from when he is “on form”, and that 315W is well below what he’s capable of doing (He’s actually just starting to build up after taking a break after cross nats).

Third, for TTs like last year’s Master Nats course, I believe it’s more about W/(CdA+Crr) than W/kg

Lastly…we haven’t even begun to “tweak” his aerodynamics

Kevin

Actually…by my rough estimates, he only would’ve needed another ~75W to match Mr. Larsen =:-0

I’m in full agreement it’s definitely about W/(CdA+Crr) - but you gotta have a really good engine, too!

I would bet that Zabriskie has lower w/Kg than many of the other top TOC riders… but has one of the very best W/CdA

Floyd rides 20 seconds faster than our hero amateur who rode a 315w average.
Can you say Ouch!

Also, assuming Levi is a little lighter and slightly more aerodynamic than Gary, I figure Levi may have “only” needed a 360w avg. to win it.
