To wear a bow tie to work or not?

Discuss.

Yes.

Depends on your job.

Less accident prone than a regular tie. It’s quite hard to get it caught in something (i.e. a paper shredder).

Work for a real estate financing company. 25% sales, 75% analysis.

I repeat, wear it.

Sure go ahead … You won’t be stereotyped … it’s not there are any strong role models who wore bow ties

Put it on fool!

I wear one about once or twice a week. Go for it. But NEVER make it a pre-tied or Clip-on.

Edit: But I’d suggest you wait out the “Apprentice” trend for a bit. Otherwise, it’s not a lot different to that unfortunate “Regis” look of a few years back. Oh - and don’t expect people to take you seriously at first.

-Knock, Knock

-Who’s there?

-BOW TIE!!!

Yeah, go for it PeeWee !

Shorts. Tee-Shirt. Bow Tie. Own it.

Yes, I do wear them.

They ALWAYS must be tie-your-own. Never pretied or clip on.

Still not sure of the impression one has upon first meeting someone when I do wear a bow tie, so I usually save it for fun, informal meetings with clients that I know well.

I have a good assortment. The best ones’s seem to come from the UK. There is a shop in downtown London, who’s name escapes me, that I have visited that has the worlds greatest selection of bow ties. Harrods has a good selection to. Harry Rosen in Toronto is the best bet locally for interesting patterns and good quality silk.

or the boss’s wife’s panties during that “hot lunch” you’re always raving about.

No.

I wore on once and all people said all day to me was, “Wow, a bow tie, man, I don’t have the guts to wear one of those.”

There is just something about bowties that scream “Dork”

did you watch the apprentice 3 ?? The guy with the bowtie drove me nuts – his look just screamed “Dork” – I could never work for him or respect him – mainly because of how he dressed.

Maybe it was the bright blue with polka dots – it looked like a clown tie. Therefore he came off as a clown – I would give him no respect and lot listen to any of his opinions.

Just being honest. Corporate world is cruel.

If you work somewhere where respect is not needed and you do not mind being regarded as a nerd or dork – then wear the tie.

I do take back a bit of what I said earlier. If I needed a good IT person – I would not mind the bowtie – I expect the IT person to be a nerd and/or dork – but I know they would get the job done.

But a project manager, sales lead, marketing, etc. – I would walk out the door.

If a doctor walked in wearing a bowtie – I would find a new doctor.

Gotta wonder why Ze Gopha is so hot on you wearing the bow tie… 5, yes, 5 times reiterated…

I hear what you are saying

It’s funny that in some/many circles the bow tie has that dork or nerd impression. My feelings are completely the opposite. Perhaps it was just my upbringing, or mentors that I have had along the way, but the men who I saw wearing them when and I knew personally when I was younger were, very intelligent and very assured of themselves - Newspaper Editors, Teachers, University Professors and the like.

Also, a tough conversation to have on this board - have you ever looked at tri wear objectively? Call it what you like, but a “one-piece-long-course technical support garment” a trisuit is still alarmingly close to a unitard in the rest of the world’s eyes.

If you are a waiter or deal cards in a casino – a bow tie is OK.

If you are a stripper – a bow tie is OK.

otherwise – this is how you will look.
