To The 29 Users With More Than 100 Watched Threads

Especially you, Damon R., with 1252 of them…, I’d like you to give me some sense of how valuable all of those “watches” are. I.e., could I drop it to less than 100 - based off date - and have you be okay with that?

When we upgraded the forum, we forwent the ability to view multiple pages of watched threads because it added a layer of complexity that would have changed how certain templates appeared. Now, I can add it in, but any development work has cost, and given that there are only 29 of you, I’m wondering if I can’t instead just build something that purges the oldest watched threads when you hit 100…

So, reply and let me know. A non-reply means that you probably didn’t even know you had that many watched threads, in which case I will take it that you don’t care if I purge them…

But then how will I find out if and when TonyG ever gets his prize?

Well, now I know there’s a watch feature. I’m watching this thread. With bated breath.

i think damon just wants to make sure he’s updated on dirty secrets and the hottie thread. i think you can kill the rest of them and he’d be okay with it.

Jordan-

I’m one of the 29. Old threads never really die, and I’ve been grateful to be emaild by my watch list when some of those old threads get bumped.

Rather than implementing multiple pages, would it be simpler to just put all of the watched threads on one huge page? Just set the lines-per-page (or whatever similar parameter you use) to some big number and let the user scroll through all his entries.

Hi Jordan,

I didn’t realize I was that exceptional.

By way of explanation, let me say I “watch” many threads that interest me since the forum goes so fast I often miss updates that roll off the first page before I log in again. I like to know if an old but interesting thread gets revived. But if a thread is so old you’ve closed it (not possible to revive it?) then of course it could drop off my list and I’d never miss it. Practically speaking most of them could age off the list automatically and I’d never miss them.

I appreciate the great tri community you, Dan and others provide, so I’m happy to comply with whatever changes you make. Don’t hesitate on my account!

Thanks,

Damon

There’s a dirty secrets thread…?!?

There is and it makes for a fantastic read. Put on a pot of coffee for that one. You’ll see how fucked up some people are on here. I put it in the same category as watching the show “Hoarders”

Uh oh. I’m one of those 29 … So, I use the watched threads for one of two things. I don’t swing by here every two hours, so if a thread interests me, it can easily roll off the first page before I make it back next time.

Two: I find that searching for things on ST always ends up giving me 20 bazillion results. So I will often use a watched thread as a way to hold onto something that I want to revisit at a later time and want to easily find. Kind of like a combination bookmark and reminder list all wrapped into one place.

I understand that it might not be worth much dev time for all 29 of us that make up this corner case, so I understand if you just end up going with a first in, first out stack which silently dumps older posts. BUT, I really hate systems that silently destroy user data and never explicitly state that a user action (adding another watched item) is about to cause that destruction. I’d vote for one of two solutions (without knowing anything about the actual complexities of either implementation): 1. Limit it to 100 watched items and make me manually go in and delete them if I have too many before I can add another one. 2. Just put them all into one long page that I have to scroll through forever to view all of the items. There aren’t many of us, so I can’t imagine that it would put much load on the server for the rare occasion that we decide to look at our watched items, but like I said, I don’t know the implementation specifics.

Anyway, that’s my take on it and whatever is decided, thanks for at least asking us about it.

Bonus points for the correct spelling of ‘bated’.

Awesome show (and not in a good way). I’ve only watched it a few times, maybe because I’d rather be riding, but maybe because it cuts a little to close to home sometimes…!
