To Sub 3hr marathoners:

What was your Half Marathon time prior your Sub 3hr?
And 10K?
I just want to know how far I am!

10k- 38.30 hills
1/2 marathon- 1:23.30
marathon- 2:54:20
.

From the same year:
5k - 17:35
10k - 37:24 (with a minute stop for calf cramp)
HM - 1:23:25
Mar - 2:59:57 (hobbling last 2 miles with same cramp as above)

The McMillan calculator is a useful estimator, but you need to treat it with care, especially for marathons. It assumes that you’re well-trained (e.g., consistent 60+mpw) and equally strong over a wide range of distances. I know that I’m stronger over short distances, so my McM equivalents are too aggressive for the marathon.

10K- 37:30
HM- 1:18:55
Marathon: 2:58 (1:26/1:32, hilly course and bad pacing on my part)
.

Google Jack Daniels run calculator. Great resource.

I haven’t run 3hrs because of swim/bike but have the 5,10k, and half markers off tri training. The jump to 3hrs is a serious leap from what I am learning.

Anyway, that site has great resources

Check out Jack Daniel Vdot sheet. http://departments.xavierhs.org/athletics/xaviertrack/HEADER4.htm

According to his sheet, it looks like:

5k in 18:50
10k in 39:00
13.1m in 1:26
26.2 in 3:00

Amazing to see these numbers, I wasn’t sure that the Macmillan or JD calculators were that accurate, but these are remarkably similar to my numbers last year:

5k 17.30
10m 37.20
Half M (didnt do an open half m, but did 1.24 in a 70.3
Marathon 3.00.29 (yes 29 seconds over, but to be fair, I didnt pace well, droped my food and genrally ‘cracked the shits’ after about 35k. Happy days)

1:18-1:19 = 2:52 (flat)-2:59 (hilly)
.

10K - 37:30 (hilly)
Half - 1:20:55 (hilly)
Marathons: Austin - 2:53:51 (fast course)
Big Sur - 2:56:58 (hilly course)

In a more recent year I just dipped under 3:00 (2:59:54) 8 weeks after Kona with no short running races - just two IMs and an Olympic.

10K: 37:14
13.1: 1:21:37
26.2: 2:58:59 (like many others, cramped up pretty bad in the last couple of miles)
.

Half = 1:18:45
Mara = 2:54:42
.

That’s the thing with running . . . the numbers don’t lie! You can either do it, or you can’t do it.

Where the running numbers are misleading, is that there is a certain amount of muscle trauma, and fatigue that build up in the last third of a marathon, that really can’t be duplicated in training. Even with fit very athletes, everything can go “well” until 20 or so miles and then the wheels come off!

One session that is often overlooked, because it does not fall into any right pace is, an actual marathon race-pace run - accumulating a volume of miles right at that, goal marathon race-pace, and in particular in “longer” runs is key.

The year I ran 2:58 I ran an early season half in 1:21 then a 1:26ish half in a 70.3. Ran sub 39s during Oly races but didn’t do open running races until after the Chicago marathon. I also ran Chicago a month after IM Wisconsin. Last year ran 2:48 at Chicago with 1:19 half time early in the season and a 1:25 run at 70.3 Muncie. 5k PR is 17:40 or so. Haven’t ran one of those in a while. And 10k was like 3 years ago and went right under 36 I believe.

In 2012
10K: 35:50
10M: 1:00:01
Half Mary: 1:20:xx
Marathon: 2:54:xx

All in 2013:

July: HM in 1:18:XX
August: 10K in 36:XX (on a whim during vacation)
September: Marathon in 2:46:XX
December: 5K in 16:50

I took a day off before the HM so I could get a relatively accurate estimate on my M-pace for September, and the McMillan calcuator was spot on for that. The 10K and 5K were both after a night of food and booze; I’d like to shoot for a 16:30 5K this year, which seems feasible.

36:05
1:16:20
2:48:58

All same year, half was net downhill, 10k was in Boulder at altitude, Marathon was Boston. Also did a 3:10 at IMFL a few months before the half.

I’ve only done one marathon and don’t think I did any 10ks that year (2007) but:
5k - 18:3X
half - 1:30
Thunder Road Marathon - 2:59:26
.

1:15, two years prior to first marathon in 2:56. 10 around 35.

I’m running Boston this year and shooting for around 2:55. My previous best marathon was 3:04, but that was a hilly course and without a true marathon training cycle.
PR’s are:
5k ='s 17:42
10k ='s 36:34
HM ='s 1:20:46

1:15, two years prior to first marathon in 2:56. 10 around 35.

with those half times I think you underperformed on gameday
